The Middle East
January 3rd, 2004 at 11:33 am by David FarrarIt may be too much to hope for but with the ousting of Saddam Hussein, the astonishing co-operation now displayed by former rogue state Libya, a possible warming of relations with Iran and some quiet diplomacy with Syria, could the Middle East be headed for better times?
Still got Israel and Palestine to solve, but it will be a huge coup for the Bush re-election campaign if in ten months relations with Libya, Iran and Syria are more normalised.

Don’t forget overtures from North Korea. Should piss off the Bush hating left brigade.

Quite apart from the electoral consequences, one would have to be pleased at an easing of tension and a reduced likelihood of any more silly little wars in a region already stained by ample blood.
Maybe the US could help by stopping supporting repressive regimes, e.g. Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and stop being so hypocritical about weapons of mass destruction given it is the only state which has used nuclear weapons, and probably has the largest stocks of them of any state on the planet?
Maybe the Arab states could come to a workable pov about Israel, work towards more open societies and political systems, stop supporting terrorists?
Maybe Israel could stop flouting international law and stop driving the Palestinians to the current levels of desperation it has managed to achieve?
A wonderful time of year for hope and nice thoughts…
