More free trade

April 23rd, 2004 at 9:37 am by David Farrar

Now this is good news. On top of moving towards gaining access to China’s huge and growing markets, ASEAN has invited us to start free trade negotiations.

It must be lonely for the Greens that the only countries in the world against free trade now are Cuba and North Korea.

Of course some like the US are more in favour in principle than in practice!

I tend to get a little irritated by the fact that people get so hung up about ‘free trade.’ It seems to me we’re a trading nation and we need it to continue, and that this is one issue. The issue of the justice (or otherwise) of the arrangements in which we trade, and their impact on our country and other less developed societies, is a separate issue. The desire of some on the madder left to continuously link these up is simply irritating.

Yay for ASEAN. Wish we could join the EU ;)
