Muldoon and Shrek

I tempted to quip that what they both have in common is an ogre as the star, but that would be unfair. In fact both are excellent entertainment.

I saw Muldoon on Saturday night and McPhail did a superb job. It was very funny at times, yet also somewhat sad. He worked into the performance almost every well known tale about Muldoon. Best of all it didn’t demonise Muldoon, but probably quite accurately showed how he viewed the whole world from his point of view – all about people he couldn’t trust or rely on.

Tonight I saw Shrek II. Shit it was funny. This is a must see. Puss in Boots was especially funny.

I liked the babies at the end between Donkey and the dragon…

Saw David McPhail in town today… from afar he looks like Muldoon… Next to Evita, this has to be the biggest political must see in theatre.

saw Muldoon on its opening night at the Auckland Festival and it was scary – one of those occasions when you can safely say you are the most left wing person in the room. my partner and i would probably have been the youngest too.

we were sitting right near the back and seeing as how my eyesight is not particularly crash hot i couldn’t make out McPhail’s face all that well, so sometimes my brain, smart thing that it is, replaced it with Muldoon’s visage. He was so convincing about everything else that my grey matter just made the logical leap.

there was a bit of confusion about the seats in our area of the theatre, as they’d got the numbering wrong, which tended to start conversations with your neighbours. two tories were talking to my partner, myself and two Labour people my partner knows and said “well they’ll never write a play about helen clark” and smirked. to which the two Labour people said “actually helen is a close personal friend of ours”. dead silence. the tories then turned around and didn’t speak to us for the rest of the show. heh heh.
