Off to Qantas I think

July 29th, 2004 at 10:06 pm by David Farrar

Air NZ has a funny idea of what a loyalty programme is, having just degraded the value of airpoints for the second time in just two years. One just can’t trust them not to degrade it even more in another year as they make profits for the Government (their owner).

An airpoint dollar is equal to 75 old airpoints. Now earning these is much harder unless you fly business or first class. I’ll use airpoint dollars only to make comparisons easy.

Auckland – Singapore economy return drops from earning $224 to $160.

Auckland – LA economy return drops from earning $280 to $230.

Auckland – London economy return drops from earning $490 to $260.

Well I’ve always needed an incentive to join the Qantas/One World Club also – now I have it.

Redeeming points (sorry, dollars) is just as troublesome. The cheapest return fare Wellington to Cairns (currently 30,000 Airpoints)in late August is $780, thats 58,000 Airpoints – nearly twice the current amount – and I would have to pay for the Wgn-Akl-Wgn sector as well.

The amount of spin by Air NZ over this change can only mean that it is bad for its loyal customers.

Air New Zealand does not know if it is a premium airline or a budget airline. It is currently stuck in a limbo between the two.

The latest change to airpoints is really sly way of devaluing air points and hoping that no one notices.

At the moment I try to avoid Air New Zealand and only use them if they are the only option or if there timetable is perfect for my travels.
