More money and less accountability

August 30th, 2004 at 9:09 am by David Farrar

The Government has had so much flak over the dubious nature of the grants from its various slush funds, it has come up with a novel new approach.

Instead of doshing out the money itself, it will hand it all over in one lump to outside organisations, and let them hand it out.

Because that way, you can not find out under the Official Information Act, who the end recepients are.

Only problem is these outsiude fund managers have taken the money, had it for over a year, and have yet to actually distribute a single dollar. They’va had lots of expenses though.

Personally the whole idea of a whanau development fund sounds exactly like what Brash targetted at Orewa – programmes based on race not need.

They may be a pack of socialists but no one should assume that they are stupid! If you can’t change public opinion but think you can get away with it, lie. Much easier than changing policy when you *know* you’re right.

Try two million $ for size. That’s this year’s govt grant to the NZ Rural General Practice Network to recruit doctors for hard hit rural areas. To date 2004 – NIL success, but an awful lot of spending. Meanwhile we in the ‘sticks’ we continue to scrape by . . .
