Save the Possums Darling!

October 28th, 2004 at 12:25 pm by David Farrar

I pissed myself laughing when I saw on TV that people in Australia had been protesting against the use of fur at a fashion parade, and the fur was possum fur.

The protesters probably think they are greenies, not realising that possums are an official noxious pest, not some endangered species such as tigers.

A recent media report said that possums eat 20 tonnes of vegetation every night. In fact the correct stat is they eat 20,000 tonnes a night and are one of our biggest conservation threats. If we can make money from killing the little buggers, then all the better.

I see the Auckland Animal Action Group justify their opposition to use of possum fur, because “to wear a dead animal’s skin is disrespectful to the animal”. Well killing our trees is disrespectful also, and the possums started it!

Possums are an exotic pest in NZ.

In Australia they are an indigenous species – I believe, though I’m not sure, that the different environment in Australia keeps their numbers down.

Maybe the Aussies could compromise and only wear NZ possum fur.

In Australia possums are endangered and a protected species. In fact some of our possums have been exported back to Australia.

For memory the reasons they thrive hear, and not in Australia, is due to greater potassium levels in our soils, lack of predators and competitors (ie:they don’t get eaten and other animals don’t eat them out of house and home). In many respects it is amazing they became established in NZ, it took many attempts over several years – they are relatively slow breeders (cf: rabbits for example).

The irony is that we want to get rid of the little bastards whilst Australia wants to save them.

For the record I support killing as many (in NZ) as possible in whatever way it takes. Bring on the 1080!

I’d be quite into a bounty scheme for getting the possum numbers down, like with the deer in the ’40s-60s. A couple of bucks per possum tail, no questions asked. Tell you what, if they brought that scheme in I’d be out there all summer killing off the little blighters.

Anyone who enjoys our bush shares the concern over the bloody Aussie pests.
Given there has been much added to the DoC estate under this govt, I do think that some of the expended resources might have been better used caring for what we have.
There have been promising interim results from local research into reproductive control techniques. Whatever we are spending on that now – it should be doubled. Surely if we can make it work, the technology would be marketable. Did I hear someone mention a knowledge economy?

I understand that greenies are not excited about the reproductive techniques b/c of the GE element (true or otherwise). Of course, Genetic Fitzsimmons has the solution to the possum problem. Simply mark the areas where you do not want them with the ashes of possum testicles and they will go away. Quite how we are going to cover all of NZ with ash I am not sure!

GPT Do you think it might work for Labour activists as well? After all they too are an Australian introduced pest. I should have realised it’s a stupid question. They’ve got no balls.

Drop a little 1080 on the next Labour Party Conference and you might knock out a good portion of them.
