The Road Trip!
October 31st, 2004 at 8:39 am by David FarrarArrived in Hamilton at midnight. This is not totally unusual in itself, but as at midday there was no intention to be around 600 kms north of Wellington, finding myself here is a tribute to the fun of totally unplanned road trips.
Miss Ten and I were driving to Paraparaumu to see young week old Master Babbage, Mr Babbage and Mrs Babbage, I mean Ms Campbell. Incidentially Finlay is incredibly cute.
On the way up said companion starts whining that her parents still haven

Excellent! Reminds me of a midnight mission for food, on finding the KFC line too big for our liking we try Ashburton, then Timaru and finally arrive in Dunedin at 6am – wake up a friend, stop at McD’s for breakfast and head back in time for lunch (we had to make it back as we had an unwilling passenger who made the mistake of 1. Asking to come along for food, 2. Falling asleep – his reaction on waking up in Timaru was classic).

Btw – is Miss Ten her real name or a reference to 10/10?

One time when Mt Ruapehu was erupting, three of us & a dog departed Newlands at 11pm. We arrived in Waiuoru at daybreak. Continuing around Ruapehu we stopped at National Park & observed the most amazing volcanic plumes. Huge things they were.
Vote:The vehicle was a WB holden ute (dog rode on the back).

GPT – yes Miss Ten is a reference to the one who was scored 10/10
coge – I was on Turoa when it erupted. We were in the car park and started snapping photos. It was only after a few minutes that it dawned on us it might be better to take photos of the volcanoa erupting, once we were off the volcano and back in Ohakune

The second ex Mrs King used to live in Hamilton when I was in Wellington when we were courting. My best time ever to Hamilton was five hours two minutes door to door from Karori. Bloody long way for a bonk now that I think about it.

Reminds me of when a mate and I went one night to get some McD’s in his diesel work ute. Lower Hutt, Johnsonville, Porirua came and went, so did Paraparam, Otaki, Levin – eventually it was McD’s in Palmerston North (remember this was a diesel ute, tons of tow but 100k was it’s absolute top speed – downhill with a tail wind).
Still remember that trip, as on the way back we stopped on the back road from Palmy and sat on the ute’s tray trying to identify as many constellations as we could. No lights and a perfectly clear warm night. Just magic.
