More flag supporters
January 20th, 2005 at 12:27 pm by David FarrarI can relate to the quote from Bernice Mene:
“Seeing the participating teams’ flags all in a row flying outside the main arena I struggled to differentiate New Zealand’s from Australia’s and many of the other Commonwealth countries”

Jeez, its not that difficult, theirs is the one flying into the wind. Besides at a distance many flags look similar, Zimbabwe and Uganda, Ireland and Italy, Liberia and Malaysia and the USA,El Salvador and Honduras.

Bernice should examine both the ockers flag and our flag carefully. The differences the number of stars and colour of them, The ockers has 6 stars and they are all white the NZ flag has four stars they are red in colour with a white outline.

And that is so easy to tell from a distance. Wow they have two more stars and with a different outline. Not exactly clearly distinctive.

Can I point out that the NZ flag does not look like the Australian flag; quite the reverse. Ours was made official in 1901 more than 50 years before the Australian’s adopted their current flag. Stuff it, if some bunch of roo burgers decide to copy it we should be proud not snivelling that ours is not ‘different enough’.
The poles, monogasts and indonesians were similarly shortsighted in reaching their designs but are they reaching for their paint boxes like snotty teens unhappy with their parents’ choice of bedroom paint?
“Yes we need a highly visible and distinctive flag like all those other great countries – Brazil, Kenya, Burma, Uganda, Papua New Guinea and ummm…oh bugger I’ve run out of colours. Back to boring old duotones.”
(cf italy ireland, venezuela equador, paraguay netherlands and croatia, Belgium andorra, moldova romania, russia slovakia and slovenia, iraq syria and egypt
The big fallacy I see in this is that people that want a change say it will make us more distinctive – to who? Most people are hard pressed to know another country’s flag, so what makes us so arrogant as to assume it will be so distinctive that any foreigner will know it is our flag as opposed to Togo’s? And if it is just to make it more distinctive to us, are we that stupid we really can’t tell? If we are that stupid changing it won’t matter cos any piece of gingham will do.
Personally I want a flag that reflects key elements of our heritage and our location. Hey what do you know, here it is: http://www.mch.govt.nz/nzflag/descript.htm

The current flag is a dog. It’s gotta go.

The current flag is a thing of beauty that thosands of our forefathers died for. Faumarina is just pissed off because the Aussies are having their flag displayed more at the Games than NZ’s.

I hope no one was stupid enough to die for a flag.
Dying for what the flag represents, now that’s different, and a new flag would allow people to continue to do that. Preferable that they live for what it represents.

The current flag should be retained!

IMHO, the current NZ flag is anonymous. And originally in (certainly English) battle flags were used more to rally knights’ own troops, rather than display to the enemy. When you’re backpacking through Crete or Indonesia what do you look for? A bland anonymous melange of red, white and blue that says “I’m an English colonial”, or (my personal favourite) a silver fern on an all black background? And, if I understand correctly, in heraldic tradition a black flag has piratical connotations – all the more reason to adopt it, in my view.

Perhaps the flag could be changed. Maybe blood red with a golden silver fern in the top left corner?

I’m gonna lay it on the table and say that I frickin despise nzflag.com and all their stupid endorsements. It doesn’t help that the main design they are championing is a pig’s arse of a thing that looks like every other stylized marketing version of the silver fern. Everyone with half a frickin brain realizes that no flag change is on the cards until we become a republic. The only redeeming feature on the nzflag.com site is Dick Frizzel’s idea for the flag which is fantastic, though it slightly resembles PNG’s flag.
