Bloody annoying
February 28th, 2005 at 5:56 pm by David FarrarI’m reading an article on Computerworld about IPv6, and a TV ad pops up with the headlines of the TV3 news bulletin to start in a few minutes.
The Stuff website pops similiar up a lot also.
I find that bloody intrusive. I don’t like video ads that pop up without my permission. Most popups are blocked but these ones get through.
No tag for this post.

David, I’m right with you on that sort of advertising, I have no problems with banners etc, but pop ups that you have to actually close before moving on really annoy me and stuff has the worst of them because you can’t close them until they have delivered their message. Note to advertisers: not many of us like that intrusive form of advertising, stay well clear of it.

they also churn through the broadband allowance which means I get slowed down
Vote:And they also slow down other browsing while they load up.
I think there should be a law against it!

I don’t like them either, but if you’re getting something for free then it’s a bit rich to complain … if you paid as a subscriber then yeah, every right to get pissed off at those annoying things.

You can block them with Firefox

Firefox is great I don’t get those probs at all. Also a tip – just don’t install any plugins then the ads don’t work anyway!

Bad news: popup ads are starting to get past Firefox too.
As I understand it, if the advertiser launches a new window from within a flash animation, the Firefox ad blocker doesn’t block it (by default – I’m not sure if this is an option).
I’m sure the Firefox developers will deal with this soon. In the meantime, if you have this problem, there’s a plugin that stops flash animations from running until you click on them (I can’t remember its name).

Aren’t those ads actually layers rather than new windows? I’m not sure how firefox would block them if so without breaking other stuff. But I haven’t looked at the code. (I just tried, but they didn’t serve any popup ads at me..)

Yeah I am on Firefox and they are not blocked, but all other popups are. Incidentially Firefix 1.0.1 has just been released.

Flashpeak.com’s “slimbrowser”, which uses the basics of IE ( including ActiveX etc) has much better functionality. plus its free.
Vote:Like ‘ show last popup’ for when you really want that popup that gives your jetstream usage, or turnoff java, activex, flash etc at whim.
Plus it has a ‘spell checker’ in the browser itself , so you check those blog postings before you hit ‘post’

I used an ad blocker add on to Firefox and don’t have the problem – you can use either a regex expression to block ads/scripts etc (e.g. */ads/*) or you can block them when you get to a site and run into a problem.
