More Treaty madness

February 27th, 2005 at 3:47 pm by David Farrar

Maori treaty claimants have written to the country’s leading scientists warning they own indigenous plants and animals and are entitled to a cut of any research and development profits.

If people want a cut of any research and development profits, there is a simple way to get it. Do some of your own research and development – don’t just freeload off the work of others.

Wait a mo’, this could be fun:

    “Dear Mr. Witi Ihimarea:

You may not be aware of this, but pakeha have tino rangatiratange over the precious taonga commonly known as the printing press and movie camera.

Please sent us our cut of your income derrived from the print and film versions of ‘The Whale Rider’. Chash or major credit card only, ta.”

wait, then there’s the roads, electricity, education, healthcare modern housing, etc etc not to forget welfare, and of course that pakeha icon, the spanish guitar…

it reminds me of the old mexican joke, not only have you gringo’s stolen half of mexico senor, you stole the half with all the roads…

I am happy that a fair price be extracted for the use of pakeha IP.

Craig: I hope you remembered to pay the Italians for the alphabet you used to post that. And I hope you remembered to pay the Greeks (?) for the entire concept of an alphabet rather than a syllabary (sp?)

You miss the point, Idiot. The Greeks and Italians aren’t asking for payments for all things Greek and Italian.

No royalty is due whenever I make a Pizza derivative and wash it down with my secret cocktail containing 1 part Ouzo and 6 parts [secret].

The maori claims have a remarkably one-sided perspective, so quid pro quo seems a perfectly reasonable point to make.

I was going to release my secret formula into the public domain, which would cure the present mental affliction suffered by Labour voters, but as it contains some indigenous plants (like the gorse bush), I’m not going to risk some long drawn out treaty claim. They’ll just have to stay afflicted.

    duh idiot!

like what Zen said. you just made the case.

now just to give you a better example – and the one you should have used if you wanted to do other than demonstrate that Craig was right – is of course that the Euros ARE being bastards about geographical indications (like whether Parma ham has to come from parma or be called something else or whether chardonnay has to be called white coloured alcoholic grape based beverage – which could be a bit of a mouthful (sic)) but NZ is fighting THEM tooth and nail through the WTO – Using your logic we should just cave in because after all wine is a french taonga. But then of course what would you socialists have left to drink???

So what do YOU think idiot, do you reckon its OK for non-elected representatives of an anti-science neolithic faction to hold everyone else to ransom over this?

(particularly given that most of the maori dudes I know are just as interested in making a buck, running a business, having a life and looking after their future as anyone else – its only these bullshit activist “victims” and their sickly pakeha apologists who fall for this crap. Didnt Billy T coin an acronym for you – PAWG i believe?

Seems to me that a non maori native born kiwi needs to file a claim with the Waitangi gravy train and test the waters for ALL the close to 4 million indigenous New Zealanders so that we can all share in the bounty offered. Flora and fauna has been here in its present form for around 30 million years wereas maori have been here maybe 800 according to Micheal King. I know he didn’t really know much about our fine country but it’s the best I can do.
Just spent the weekend up in Mahia where a little controversy has been going over the development of the old Motor camp. Its getting developed into sections after the council advised the owner that he would have to spend 700k over 2 years to replace the sewerage system. Some local protesters attended the resource hearing and put forward the idea that it was sacred land. After one of the councilers pointed out that it had been a motor camp, with around 10000 people visiting it every summer, for 47 years and this was the first time its tapu factor had ever been brought up they shut up quickly.
The point is that the attitude of other local Maori was that this is going to happen anyway so we should be trying to get in there and be part of it. Very refreshing to see some positivity instead of whinging moaning hand extended native parasites.
Also lovely people looked after the family in all our needs. Highly recommend.
