National Radio on PM Howard

February 25th, 2005 at 6:51 pm by David Farrar

National Radio displays intelligent insight (Yes I am being sarcastic) in discussing Australia sending some troops to Iraq to guard Japanese Engineers. Their summary:

“Simplisticly one would look and say that John Howard is kowtowing to George Bush, trying to get an invitation to the ranch to stay in with his mate in the White House”

Never mind that the issue wasn’t even discussed with the US, and was due to a direct request from Japan.

Of cause that is why Howard is doing it David. Have you not heard that Bush has just hired a new chef that can cook a good B.B.Q. Who wouldn’t risk there nations armed forces for a good T-bone?

If you believe that David you should leave the political arena immediately. I don’t know a single Australian who believed that line (Japanese request)….

    Lloyd -

Jesus, you’re a knob. I think you should believe what the Japanese Prime Minister says in the Diet, don’t you?

I am sure Howard has his reasons. America is vital to Austrlia’s long term security and consequentially NZs. And of course Japan is very important to Australia’s long term economic security and consequentially NZ’s. So the reasons for the troops are diplomatic. Of course the NZ Government cares for none of these things and again who cares what we think about anything in foreign relations. We have no defence force, we borrow heavily from abroad, we need access the foreign markets. Countries like that, do as they are told and we do, despite silly pretenses to the contrary including our nuclear policy.

BTW, Lloyd perhaps we know very different types of Autralians by=ust most of the Aussies I know think Australia should be fully involved in the reconstruction, whether they supported the war or not. Sounds more humane than the voices in your head.

Chronic – I think it is a very safe bet that the democratically elected Government of Iraq is delighted to have protection for the Japanese engineers who will be helping rebuild Iraq.

If Estonia does need our help, then let the record state that I am very willing to be sent there.

I’m Australian, and I’m quite happy that the troops are being sent. In fact, I’m a little ashamed of just how few we are sending, but it’s better than nothing, I guess. I also believe that the Japanese angle is very important for the long-term security of Australia (and by extension NZ) in the Pacific (!). Read a few Australian newspapers, like today’s Australian, and you’ll see I’m not alone.

I guess it’s out of the question to ask whether New Zealand would consider sending a company of troops as well? Technically, New Zealand’s troops are now better equipped (with the LAV III) than the equivalent Australian cavalry troops.
