Yay – some balance
February 28th, 2005 at 11:32 am by David FarrarThe NZ Herald puts some balance back into the cellphone in car debate by reporting that passengers, adjusting controls and radio/cd players are recorded as being a factor in more crashes than cellphones.

However, I always know if I am following a car whose driver is using a cell phone – evn if I can’t see the cell phone. Saying that, in many cases where suspect driver skills are being displayed, one can also tell the nationality of the driver. Can’t ban them!

Let’s go with the greens on this one and just ban cars!

Is that the 2 wrongs make a right theory David!

It is about consistency of approach, and also about looking at benefits and costs.
If lowering the road toll was the *only* factor, then we would simply require all cars to be given speed limiters so they can not drive at over 30 km/hr.
Why do we not do this? Because it would impose a huge financial and other costs on motorists. We would spend half our lives in cars.
Likewise for banning radios in cars. There would not be a financial cost, but it would lower the quality of life for millions of NZers who like to listen to the radio while driving.

My present car doesn’t have a radio and I admit I feel far more aware of my surroundings when driving long distance.
Answering the cellphone drops my awareness to a narrow range out in front of the car.
Did anyone else see something about the petrol tax being raised again? I only caught the last half of One News.

Yep, another 5c a litre to pay for roading projects. The last one was for ACC, previous to that it was roading projects again.
I think they’ve made a political mistake – oil just went up $10 a barrel this week so we can expect several price increases in Feb, then the govt tax increase. God help us if the dollar retreats.

Tax is definitely a big issue for this years election. Fricken hell they have unbelievable tax growth anyway, yet they still levy another increase.
