Cows moving up

April 29th, 2005 at 6:59 am by David Farrar

David Young and Ben Thomas, of Dog Biting Men (in)fame are becoming media super-stars.

As well as their fortnightly NBR column, David is also starting work for TVNZ as a business reporter.

I’m fairly amused that we have someone who now writes for both NBR and the Listener. I am sure there are some dead people turning over in graves. To be fair the Listener has opened up to a more diverse line-up of voices under editor Pamela Stirling.

David W Young represents a more diverse line of voices in the Listener? That’s sarcastic or not?

Its good to see the Listener represent more than the insular world of the liberal left.

I’ve noticed a vast improvement since MacDonald was banished to the Star Times. Articles from non-lefties! Brave stuff! I don’t mind partisan newspapers or magazines as long as they are honest about where they are coming from. Hence, papers like the Guardian and Independent are fine because you are aware of their open bias. The Listener was blatantly left wing with left wing columnists, which itself is fine, but MacDonald was convinced that his magazine reflected broad opinion. He was utterly deluded.

The Independent and Guardian also regularly publish material that differs from the editorial position. The Guardian, for examnple, was anti-war but published Aaronvitch and others with different views. That wasn’t how the Listener used to be.

I didn’t have a problem with the editrial line of the Listener, or even that it was Left wing (since I consider myself Left wing) but it didn’t even give expression to the wide range of opinions within the Left. It was just the lunatic Chomsky Left.

Oh Chomsky. You mean the favoured author of John Campbell.

I think they need new pseudonyms to replace the Cow. So which one is the Giant Douche and which one is the Turd Sandwich?

Sockie – i think your leftwingedness is quite out of tune with most people’s ideas of leftwingedness. well except for the people who think Clark is a socialist.

(sorry got the rest of it cut off, my bad)

I loved the Listener when Finlay was editor, but under Stirling’s editorship it’s got very “lifestyle” which is disappointing. I had a subscription for years but didn’t renew it after she took over. I still buy it occasionally. I didn’t stop because I didn’t agree with the politics (although I do miss Finlay’s editorials and his SST columns aren’t as good) because I frequently found things in the pages of the Listener that I disagreed with. It was the actual topics being covered (yoga, plastic surgery etc) and the lack of depth in some of the articles which were political.

That and my abiding disappointment in Jane Clifton – ever since she wrote that dog column she seemed to go a bit off the boil to me.

sorry that should say at the end of the sentence, ie:
“because i frequently found things in the Listener that I disagreed with under Finlay’s helm too.”

Just the one? I’ve heard quite a few four letter pseudonyms used to describe me.
