Well done Chris Liddell

April 27th, 2005 at 1:16 pm by David Farrar

As many will have read, a New Zealander – Chris Liddell, has been appointed Chief Financial Officer of Microsoft.

This is the most senior role in Microsoft after that of the Chairman and Chief Executive. The turnover last year was a bit above NZ$50 billion. Microsoft is the third largest company in the world.

Incidentially Mr Liddell is also a supporter of the NZFlag campaign.

Certainly, congratulations to Mr. Liddell. Could the media just leave the nationalistic glory-by-association out of it? I know someone who worked closely with him at CHH, and he sounds like the kind of smart, passionate and focused man who’d have done great things if he’d been born in a gutter in Ulan Bator.

Though if Chris can banish the blue screen of death, I’ll put him up for sainthood. :)

While I’m happy that a New Zealand boy has done good, I agree with you Craig. This we’re-cool-by-association stuff from the NZ media is getting old.

It’s an interesting appointment though. His previous jobs were in the paper industry – a mature, slow-moving industry. Microsoft probably has a similar view on the future of the desktop software market, which may have been one of the reasons for the appointment.

    Incidentially, Mr Liddell has 3 L’s & 2 D’s in his surname…….

I’m sure being a supporter of the NZ FLag campaign wnet a huge way in his appointment.

Good on him. I hope he enjoys Seattle.

Maybe in the spirit of third way socialism and the pro-change talking points NZ could license the national flag to micosoft. Good for the budget and those middle east snipers.

Congratulations to Mr. Liddell on attaining a senior post in a major world corporation. Now, if he will just leave our national flag alone…..Backing the change the flag campaign doesn’t improve his standing in my books.
It has ocurred to me that if people spent a little more time carrying out their jobs and a little less time trying to change the flag, we might actually achieve better results in many areas. For example, the chef de mission of the NZ Olympic team spent quite a bit of media time prior to the last games spouting on about that tiresome silver fern on a black background. Our medal haul in hindsight hasn’t really been all that great.
There’s nothing wrong with the NZ flag. It doesn’t require changing. A desire to remove the Union Jack from a country’s flag is a notable feature of many banana republics.

Whenever I’ve seen it, the flag always looks clean, so why do people want to change it so much?

Quite a commendable achievement, but leave the flag alone the new designs look terrible.
