I dont think her ruling is cut and dried the constitutional lawyers will know but I reckon she can be got on the grounds of misfeasance in public office and on the 1688 Act? Her ruling is so out of order its farcical.She has a conflict of interest a mile wide She aint independent on anyones definition.She has just gazumped the PM “by definition I can anything I bloody well like”

I just thought it was, well, rather good.

To emphasise this further I had to hack you down a bit to make the then compliment worthy of meaning anything in its dramatic contrast.

The Speaker just has too much power under standing orders to let it go to any old mortal. Hence Margaret, and she proved her worth to the PM when she shut down the privileges complaint. I guess the Police inquiry which will cover the same ground as a privileges committee inquiry into BePops credibility and this was going to be too messy. May even prejudice a criminal prosecution. Anyhow it is just too cute isn’t it and probably why the police complaint was made.

I would be interesting to hear some–I think this is a non-partisan issue actually. It’s within everyone’s long-term interest to have a neutral Parliament.

You asked for it Gee !.

You forgot to mention the House of Commons speaker once elected retains office till retirement, in spite of a change of government ( this is as well as not being opposed by the main parties at re election time).

None of the old dominions plus the US House bother with these conventions anymore. The modern practice is for the majority party to have the speakers job. Just picking the low hanging fruit about UK parliamentary practice were you. Why not include the convention where British MPs cant resign their seats, they use a device to be disqualified by being appointed to a crown office such as Steward of the Chiltern 100’s.

But espeacilly loved your analysis of what is a prima facie case. The Speaker is a former Law professor while you passed School Cert law.
No court in the country would accept a case soley based on 2 complainants assertions from 20 yrs ago when they were 14. ( Did they complain at the time, why not )HIde produced no other material except affadavits which are worthless when you compare a respected teacher’s credentials with that of two thugs.
Yes this all suits BP and Labour to a tee, so you can selectively quote who ever you like it wont change anything ( and I dont remember jenny Shipley even standing aside when she got tangled up over who she said she went to dinner with in 1999 and I think it wasnt a big deal either)
