Garth George compares Peters to Holyoake
June 30th, 2005 at 6:33 am by David FarrarIt is almost funny – Garth George has labelled Winston Peters “the most astute and intuitive politician we have seen since Keith Holyoake”.
Is that the sound of someone turning in his grave, I hear?

Peters thinks he can hijack the election and keep the voters (including his voters) completely in the dark as to what Government they are going to get after the election. I can see growing pressure on him to make it clearer who he wants to deal with. Peter Dunne has said he will give a preference to the largest party. Peters has said nothing. So the voteres will have no idea what we are going to end up with. Winston wants to decide the election.

Peters is without any doubt the smartest political animal on the scene in NZ.
I can agree that from a POLITICAL strategy point of view – I think peters is better than ANY other leader since the 1960′s.
I suspect that National rue the day they chucked him out all those years ago – however as the manager of a country he wouldnt be much good – but as we see with recent governments – its not really the politicians that run the place but all those strange people in the ‘Bro-rocracy’ – so he may have been so bad.
Vote:Hes certainly got the best smile of them all – teeth in the right place, not a hair out of place, etc. Apparently he was known as ‘Luigi’ when at university – I guess a referance to his Itialian like looks and his Italian type appeal to the ladies around town.

Deja vu.
The worst part of it is the picture I now have of Garth George.
I must look up the words to that old ’60s classic – “Keith Holyoake Blues”. The only bit that is floating around is “…his toothpaste smile…”
Hey! Mebbe George is right!!!

Of course Garth Geoge is right. He just forgot to add ‘unprincipled’ which Sir Kieth was not.

Peters is good in his own niche. There is a difference between being able to successfully stir up 10% support from arch-conservatives and blue collar workers (the same target audiences as fascism, but I digress…) and being a good policitican who can run a government or the main opposition party. Sure Peters is good, but in a completely different sphere of politics to Sir Keith.

I agree with him Peters is intuitive and astute. He intuitively knows waht the largely elderly constituents of his electorate want and is astute enough to promise it. In the last election he railed against the De Facto/Marriage bill knowing full well his audience of 1950ites still considered De Facto relationships as living in sin. He couldn’t have been better served having the architect of that bill, Margaret Wilson against him Now it is the good old bribe to the retired.

I am not too sure why Labour and National are so desperate for coalition talks with NZF. NZF have repeatedly stated that there will be no discussions till after the elections. It is really pointless at this stage because there is no certainty on what the end outcome will be. Let me suggest a few alternatives.
Vote:1. Labour + National Coalition
2. Obtain 51% of the votes
3. Consider the formation of a minority government
4. Consider talking seriously to the Maori party and their anticipated 5-7 MPs
Labour not announcing the election date and National not announcing their tax policies is worse than NZF leaving coalition discussions until after the elections.

I actually agree, Peters does seem very intuitive and astute when it comes to appealing to peoples prejudices and fears. He is exceptionally good at what he does. I don’t agree with his platforms at all, but I don’t have to to see that he is very effective. He has a knack for hitting the right nerves and assessing which prejudices to peddle this election.

There is no doubt that Winston ia a smart political strategist. As one of those “Arch-Conservatives” I even agree with some of what the party stands for. If I wanted to live in Korea or China I would move there. I dont, and neither do most Kiwis.
My main beef with NZF is there opposition to the free market and a weak foriegn policy.

That isn’t spinning you hear. It was me losing my breakfast. On the other hand I could just know that Garth George would come up with something like that.

They are similar in the sense they are/were both opportunistic and very conservative, but really similarities end there in my opinion.

All politicians are opportunistic. Those that arent are the ones not elected to Parliament.

I agree with you Shawn.Who couldn’t?A little incident to illustrate that colour has nothing to do with class. I was loading my car boot after shopping at a Mall ,in Auckland. The car park,as is often the case, was not entirely level,so to avoid the trolley running away,I GENTLY put it against the next door car to keep it steady.Next thing I knew ,the trolley was wrenched away with me holding onto it so that I was stabbed by the trolley handle. The point is this..the white, angry,British pig opined that New Zealanders are ignorant savages.I ,having some experience, conclude that he,being a small man ,
Vote:PROBABLY ALSO HAS A SMALL PENIS,which is probably why he was so psychopathic in the first place. His colour was not important. This post probably does not matter, except that I feel A GREAT DEAL BETTER now.Thanks.
