The Great New Zealand Argument

June 29th, 2005 at 12:57 pm by David Farrar

Russell has been in the news this week for the release of his book “Great New Zealand Argument: Ideas about ourselves”.

I’ll be picking up a copy at the weekend, as part of my normal shopping spree for books. Expats can order a copy from this site.

I am intrigued at what Margaret Pope says on the Oxford University speech which she authored.

One day I must get around to finishing my own book about life in Parliament for National. Playing with the title “Four Coups and a Wedding” :-)

Trouble is too many people still alive for it to be safe to publish!

So dress it up in fiction! That’s what I’m doing with Kiwianatopia (publishing moguls welcome).

Which are the four coups David? You are too young to have been around pre Bolger assuming the leadership so I can only get to three – Shipley, English, Brash – so what was the fourth? And is the wedding a tongue in cheek reference to the National/NZ First Coalition?

The fourth coup could either refer to one of the Deputy Leader coups, or to the ‘presidential coup” when Boag challenged Slater (which was much more interesting).

And yes the wedding is referring to the coalition :-)

Incidentially I had just joined Young Nationals when McLay was Leader and hence was involved a bit when the Bolger coup happened. However fair to say my view was not as good as some of the more recent ones!

Please David do not go over the ground of that Boag woman, as a bit player in that episode it gave me and others no pleasure at all to be right, absolutely right about that woman. I told her to her face that she was totally unsuited to be President of the National Party. What I fear is she might make another attempt at influence in the Party, and all I can say is the only way is to embalm her, cremate her and then bury her, take no chances.
