Taxpayer funded transgender surgery

The Taranaki Daily News has the story of a 73 year old who has had the Government (you and me) pay for her $30,000 gender reassignment surgery.

One can have a speerate debate about whether the taxpayer should fund such surgery at all, but even if you do accept in principle it may be okay for such funding, I really have to question the appropriateness of such funding for a 73 year old. With scarce health resources surely this is not a priority.

And just to annoy taxpayers even more, we read she can not pay for the surgery herself as she has a gambling habit!

But remember there’s no money available for tax cuts!
