Here’s a thought. What’s to stop an unscrupulous political party (not that we have such a thing in this country) from stealing an opponents billboard a couple days before the election then putting them up again in the early hours of the morning?

Well in Na .. an unnamed party I am familiar with, we have numbers on all the hoardings and let the Returning Officer know before e-day which ones have been stolen so if they do turn up on e-day we can prove it was not us.

For yes that has happened before Dim.

Um, the law.

But in reality, nothing.

I’m pretty sure it’s going to happen somewhere, but it won’t be a political party doing it – just like how you’re not allowed to vandalise hoardings – it happens, but it ain’t official…

absurd law

Are you also aware that it is illegal to have a bumper sticker for any party or candidate on your own car unless you hide your car from public view? Where is the outrage over such a stupid, silly, absurd, ridiculous example of nannyism?

I would like to see this challenged in court as a violation of an individuals freedom of speech. It would be good if that concept had any support in NZ but apparently it doesn’t.

I noticed an classified in the public notices section of our local paper yesterday from a local candidate for Destiny stating that he and his party had made every endeavour to get all of their material down by midnight Friday and would not take any responsibility for anything that turned up today. Not sure if that would be enough to get you off the hook.

Bumper stickers are ridiculous – you are supposed to “cover them up”. what a crock.

Seems like a load of crap to me too – why, even on David’s blog you only have to scroll down half a page to see a large banner clearly in support of one particular party, and against another particular party.
Is the defense that the image was posted prior to election day? Why doesn’t the law require that be taken down as well?

At least for physical party billboards it does make some sense, in that if it wasn’t required by law for them to be removed, they might be left to cause an environmental hazard later, but otherwise I don’t see the point…

So what does happen with the billboard that are taken down? Are they taken to the tip? or is it stored to be reused next time? Problem with latter is you end up with lots of billboards taking up storage space.

Any material published on a website before Midnight can stay there, but nothing new that could be construed as advertising can’t be posted until after 7pm.

To be honest, I’m completely mystified as to why you can’t have billboards up on polling day. Can anyone explain the rationale behind their prohibition to me?
