Pork Barrel Politics

Many right wing in the have been pressuring Congress to fund the $200b cost of Hurricane Katrina reconstruction by cutting .

However it seems that the US Senate has an unwritten rule that one senator does not attack the projects sought by another.

Despite that tradition, a Senator tried to get $220 million cut off for a bridge in Alaska. This was deemed so outrageous the senior Alaskan Senator said he would resign if they removed the funding – so it was defeated 15-82.

The $220 million bridge, by the way, will service around 50 people!
