New Year Honours

December 31st, 2005 at 7:46 am by David Farrar

The official list is on the DPMC Website.

Nice to see Ralph Norris honoured. He would be Sir Ralph if they hadn’t got rid of the titles.

Most amusing entry was find out Bic Runga’s full name – Ms Briolette Kah Bic Runga. I think Briolette is a cool name – just never heard of it before.

Hey, one of my high school teachers got a nod, and a tutor of mine at university!

I guess you’re not into her CDs too much, if you look who the music publisher is, it’s “Briolette Bic Music”.

On the question of knighthoods, I was extremely annoyed when they were discontinued, seemingly at a whim, by a government that did not make any effort to consult its people on the subject. I remember at the time some comment about knighthoods being part of an archaic system of privelige… by people too ignorant to know the difference between the peerage and the honours system. The point being that knighthods were EARNED (or at leastfbought!), whereas peerages are generally inherited. The exception being life peerages, which are, like knighthoods, earned (or bought).
Now with knighthoods having been flushed down the socialist plughole, we are left with an even more elitist system than we had before. At least the public at large knows that ‘Sir’ Somebody has done something useful to merit his title…. but who can name even ONE of the invisible holders of the so-called ‘Order Of New Zealand’? Only those in a select clique would know who the 18 holders are. How elitist is that? Come to think of it, who can correctly even name the award itself? Is this its correct name? I dunno.
I would like to see a campsign to bring back knigthoods – oh yes, if we must, we’ll reintroduce Dames as well – so that outstanding New Zealanders can receive the full recognition that they deserve.
