Coke
January 20th, 2006 at 9:58 am by David FarrarChaucey blogs about the new Coke Zero which is meant to taste like regular coke, but had the low calories of diet coke.
The funny thing for me is that since I switched to diet coke a few years ago, I don’t particularly like the taste of regular coke. I much much prefer diet coke’s taste.
What do others prefer? Coke or Diet Coke? Or Pepsi? Or Diet Pepsi? Or Fanta?

Pepsi Max or grape Fanta mate

I personally like Diet Coke too , normal Coke always has a strange after taste and leaves me feeling bloated but have found I get the wierdest looks when I order a Diet Coke and Vodka at any of the Auckland bars.
Vote:I tried the coke zero in the states last year and was not impressed it had the same after taste. I would how ever buy as much Dr Peppers as I could if someone either made or imported it here

It’s funny you should say that – I had the exact same experience. Diet coke tasted yuck for a while, and then it became ordinary coke that tasted yuck. Shows that tastes are acquired – I put sugar substitute into expresso and compared it with normal sugar. Initially the substitute tasted bad (sucaryl), then after about a month it was sugar that tasted bad.
I’ve moved now to drinking neither kind of coke, and haven’t rued the loss – water tastes fine if you drink it a lot, and it’s both cheaper and better for you than coke. Diet coke seems to have a laxative effect.
I also used to think cold water tasted better than tepid, but recently I’ve found tepid is actually nicer, since I’ve taken to bottling water and drinking it whilst in the car – it gets warm, and I’ve developed a taste for that.
Wierd, I guess our taste buds are conservatives at heart, but they come around eventually, when it doesn’t kill you.

nigel, I have definitely seen Dr Peppers here from time to time in cafes. Perhaps if you tried the New World in College Hill (Auckland) or Metro (Wellington) – they often have overseas foods that you don’t see elsewhere, although I haven’t actually seen it at either place.
I had the same experience about the taste stuff with milk. And also I used to get cravings for Coke specifically from McDs, i.e. all watered down with ice. One becomes accustomed.

Diet coke and other drinks of that ilk should be illegal. Bring on the sugar!

Diet Dr Pepper, hmmmmm.

Diet Coke tastes like insipid flat crap. I OD’d on Coke, etc from years in the hospitality trade changing syrup bags and drinking from splits guns. You can’t go wrong with Golden Circle Sasparilla.

Diet vanilla! The latest in long line of addictions.

All I’ll say is that if someone ever offers you “Pepsi Samba”, run a mile. Tried it in Melbourne last month — never again. “Tropical” is not a flavour!

Dr Pepper yuk, more like Dr Peppers cough formular, terrible stuff.
Vote:To me you can’t beat plain Coke, I don’t mind Root Beer either.

I moved to having Diet Coke with rum instead of normal Coke to cut back on the sugar. It tasted odd at first but soon became acceptable. The Coke must be fresh and cold to be as close as possible to the real thing. However Im now having Pepsi Max instead because the taste is better again and go’s well with both rum and bourbon.

Be careful on the energy drinks exocet – I used to get by on a Red Eye a day durin the week and then I started getting these funny blinding migraines. Now I can’t drink even a mochacinno without feeling the migraine coming on within an hour. No more energy drinks for me.
Plus caffeine actually dehydrates you, apparently.

Mountain Dew (but not from a bottle – the crystalised stuff on the neck is yuck), Pepsi or V. In the first year of my degree, we would have these large communication lectures every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. They went for about 3 hours, so I would stock up on Red Bulls before going in. They didn’t help. :p
Incidentally enough, I was invited to participate in a survey about the upcoming Coke Zero ad. However, it would work with my version of Quicktime so I gave up (even after they issued a smaller sized video).

Diet Raspberry Coke!

In changing from regular coke to diet coke all that is happened is that you have exchanged your sugar addiction for an aspartame addiction. Aspartame is a powerful carcinogin (just google it)and there is talk in the states of banning it. Thats why Coca Cola is so keen to find a cheap replacement.

I now prefer diet coke but it took a while. There is that joke about Paris Hilton not liking diet coke because she said only fat people drink diet coke. Oh well, zero leomonade is very good too.

Steinlarger! don’t have to mix it with anything. comes in a handy, ready to drink from bottle and it says on the bottle…. pure crisp clean. so it must be good for you!

Definitely Fanta, coke only occassionally as a mixer, or when at favorite cheap Asian eatery and no byo.
Vote:January 20th, 2006 at 8:17 pm
Fanta’s been the cool choice since it displaced that stupid Perrier back in the 80′s.
Vote:It’s the original designer drink – special consultant Leni Riefenstahl closely matched its ersatz orange to the unique hue of Hitler’s urine. Prost!

I always took the view that if you wanted sugary shite to drink, why would you drink anything that wasn’t beer. But now, working for Americans in a beer-free country, I’m forced to adopt their unsavoury drinking habits, viz diet Coke (because that seems to be the only sugar-free one that’s reliably available for free in the Dining Facility). You can get diet Dr Pepper from the PX, but that costs money. Unfortunately, diet Mountain Dew doesn’t seem to exist. Drinking the sugared versions of all of the above seems to me completely insane, unless you have an ambition to eventually look like the Michelin Man with type 2 diabetes.

Zero everything = metallicy chemical aftertaste. Y’know, the one that makes your teeth feel all furry, and not in a good way.
Especially Fanta Zero (orange)! Gack!!!
Energy drinks are another thing altogether. I had to have at least one a day at Uni and more if there was a terribly boring lecture. Cost a pretty f’n penny toowhen living on the student allowance. I’m off them mostly these days, but I’ll go through a week here or there where its back to the ol’ health-desroying habit, particularly when V is here in the UK now (The only good thing about the French owning Frucor!).
Go the dihydrogen monoxide!

I’ve only been away a week and a bit, but I already miss my favourite drink, L&P.
(Aren’t any of you diet people at all concerned about the alleged effects of asparatane or whatever the fuk it’s called? Or is that just some conspiracy theory nut thing?)
Vote:January 21st, 2006 at 12:00 pm
I think aspartamine effects shouldn’t be completely ignored, but sugar also has a lot of bad effects if consumed in quantity. Moderation again?
One nice thing about drinking water is that it’s not fizzy so you don’t get hiccups and belching.
I really was surprised how little I missed these drinks after stopping for a few weeks. A large part of it was, I think, the little break from work of going to the vending machine. Substitute something cheaper and healthier, that takes more time to prepare, and you get that benefit too.
