First ever woman to be jailed for life
February 25th, 2006 at 11:04 pm by David FarrarPreventative detention, which is basically life imprisonment with no parole, is usually for recidivist sex offenders. Hence up until this week no woman had ever been given the sentence.
But Kino Hoki Matete with a truly appalling history of violence, has made history. Aged only 26 she is probably also one of the youngest to
have been given preventative detention.
A classic case of not mad, but simply bad.

It’s no surprise she was once a ward of the state. More proof that a government is the worst parent one can have.

What really surprised me was this:
Two hundred and eight men are serving preventive detention, mostly for sex crimes.
If I had been asked to guess I would have said somewhere between 50-100, but 208 is getting on for about 5% of the total prison muster!

First up 10 points to the Judge for giving this person Preventative Detention but its a bit rich to make the following comment in my opinion at least:
“but he [Justice Miller] said it was essential that she was offered early and effective “intervention” that took account of her cultural needs.”
I think with 11 convictions for violence offences since 1994-2004 the opportunity for early intevention has been well and truely missed. But also I would be curious to know how many White New Zealanders have their cultural needs taken into account while in Prison?

Mr Nobody…
Cultural needs for white people such as…?

..and sad. Adoptive parents split at 10… ward of state… only 1 year secondary school… in the big house since 15… most of the violent crimes occured in prison…
and the judge thinks it best that she be kept there forever? Isn’t that environment making it worse? Isn’t it making it worse for the other people in contact with her? Then again, what are the other options? Miserable, wretched and tragic – the whole scenario. The only good that will come of it may be an in-depth North & South article.
Maybe her “care-givers”/institutions responsible for her upbringing can be charged over this. Contributing to a delinquency of a minor? Neglect?

I’m sorry to lower the tone of the conversation, as such… But am I the only one that noticed that if she wasn’t pulling such a face, she’d probably be drop-dead gorgeous?? Actually reminds me of an ex of mine… Pity is, so do the behavioural patterns.

Belt:
I would argue all the same areas of cultural need that Non-White New Zealanders have taken into consideration with their sentences.
As a White New Zealander I would be expecting:
- My Family and Extend Family included provided the opportunity to participate in my rehabilitation.
- Rhabilitation programs designed to take into consideration My European/Celtic ancestory and particular spirtual needs.
These are two examples of events that occur everyday in prison for Non-White New Zealanders in our prison system.

yup,the state is a bad parent but way better than the shit situation she’d have been removed from.A closer look at the poor wretched things history would read something like:sired by a piece of shit, whelped by a fourteen year old with no idea, goes without saying that the sire is related to the dam, probably the first notification before her first birthday, first broken bone/head injury before her first birthday, first sexual violation before two years of age.And that would be for starters, years and years of sexual, physical and emotional abuse, half starved and shuffled from pillar to post before any real intervention by the state. And now that she’s old enough lock her up and chuck the key away. The only problem is that she’s not a dog,if she was we could”blue juice” her.IMHO the whole lot of us should hang our heads in shame,as a society we have failed this poor stupid creature at every level. We have failed to protect her as an infant, failed to educate her etc, etc.I have to admit it,the plight of this young woman and so many others just like her really does bring a tear to my eye.

mj – why should I hang my head in shame? I had no part in her crap life. Lay the blame where it belongs. With her family and later when she became an adult, with her own self.

um? because so far our society, you and I Brian, will most probably have spent around $750,000 so far and achieved absolutely nothing with another $1,000,000 to keep her locked up for the next 15/20 years. And for our $1,750,000 we,you and I Brian, will still have a mad dog that we’ll never be able to let off its chain. This woman is our problem.

Ok mj If she is MY problem how about letting Me have a say in how to deal with the problem Oh no I forgot Im not allowed to have an opinion.Only the experts are allowed those.I just have to keep paying and paying and paying whilst common sense solutions are ignored.Frankly Im sick to death of hearing the same old refrain. Its called indiviual responsibility.Thats the solution and until Society takes its collective head out of its arsehole and demands responsibility we will continue to see the same tragic figures time and time again.Forget the guilt trip thing mI dont buy into it and I suspect the vast majority of citizerns dont either.

I agree with gd. Except that when over half the population is molly-coddled by the state and never has to make any decisions for themselves or take any reponsibility for their future I think we will be waiting a long time for any return to a concept of individual reponsibility.

no guilt, millions and millions to incarcerate over 7000 people, more millions to build more prisons, piss poor housing, huge numbers of young people that upon leaving school are so close to being illiterate/innumerate that they’re unemployable.A health system thats crippled by the huge cost of lifestlye/third world disease,TB etc. That,my friends is shame, shame that we can’t do better. As an insight into where we’re heading I’d recommend a drive from Littlerock,Arkansas to New Orleans.Mile after mile of abject poverty, prisons and churchs.Seems to me that if wer’re prepared to keep on paying whilst ignoring what’s going on then we deserve what we get and no amount of bleating about “personal responsibility”,”nanny state”and “not my problem”will change a thing.
