The annual cork count
February 26th, 2006 at 8:37 pm by David FarrarWell it’s been a year since the last great cork count. In 2004/05 we managed 392 bottles of wine. This year the bets ranged from 365 to 442. My guess was 400.
Well we were all wrong. The photo below shows how many corks we had.

Now to save you all counting it was 456. This is a remarkable level as several of us missed for a couple of months the normal weekly sessions. There’s around ten of us who contributed to the count. However I’m blamed for around 1/4 of the total, the host for another 1/4 and the rest sharing the remaining half.
95% of the wine drunk would be red wine. To think once upon a time I didn’t like it.

Few start out liking red wine. I started drinking it in the late seventies, as (a) it was dirt cheap
and
(b)you could take it to a party, knowing that nobody else would touck it- unlike beer or spirits!
Ones tastes mature!

What’s the Local:Imported ratio like ? But keep up the good work, has to be better for you than Vodka !

If an average of $15 per bottle then $6840!
DPF do you keep a record of what you have drunk, NZ or OZ? What was the best bottle? Is the group a wine club or just mates, who like wine?

I have double that in chocolate wrappers.
In fact, I’ve entered the current Cadbuy promotion so many times with each wrapper I’m embarrassed by my consumption.

Would “the host” be The Extremely Tall One?
Just think how good the future would look if you were sensibly cellaring one for every one you drank…

Life must be good under the present govt, if the cork & screw cap ratio is up for the year.
I only drink Red Wine as wines go, heck DPF and I have something in common after all.
I think the Aussie reds, Shiraz, Cab Sav, etc, are as good as anything in the world for the price. As far as NZ Reds go over priced for the quality. Best Reds for value from Chile, Argentina , biggest rip of in Reds, anything produced in California.

…or things are worse than ever and the drink is all that keeps DPF from slitting the wrists…;-)

Do you have to keep the corks to convince the Inland Revenue of the veracity of your entertainment expenses.

Cadmus, ah, drinking a little too much might explain your barely intelligible rantings and may account for your spelling and grammar too.
Vote:Shame on you really, drinking those expensive reds when people are in real Poverty here in NZ, working hard, and can’t afford the necessities of life and end up in a john Doe grave.
Still, i guess alcoholism goes with being a part of NZ 1st if Winston is anything to go by.

Please someone call another election and help save my wine cellar. You wouldn’t believe how often Dave has been at it since October… The most expensive was a $220 bottle, the cheapest $6.50.
Yes, screwcaps are definately becoming a force in wine. Two years ago there were none. Last year there were fifteen and now 81.

Icehawk – yes it is the very tall one.
Silas – no we don’t keep track. And not a wine club even though we have done the odd wine tasting. The drinking is mainly from gaming or DVD sessions.

That’s not as impressive as drinking the same number of bottles of Speights.

Trout, The masses can enjoy a nice bottle of red wine now. In the past and I believe the future under your lot the pleasure of a red wine will be a cask of Velluto Rosso with a splash of water to make it go further.
Vote:I tried to get into the Donna & Wi Huata school of literacy, but they said there were no vacancies. I mentioned you Trout as an ex pupil of the school, as a reference for me. They informed me, Trout is back at the Huata School having failed again last years course! I haven’t seen you on the boards for a few days, how are your studies going? Give my regards to Wi & Donna.
