Tom Frewen sacked

February 25th, 2006 at 11:27 am by David Farrar

From this Greens PR it appears Radio NZ has sacked Tom Frewen. Does anyone have a copy or know what his 10 February NBR column said, as this appears to be responsible for his sacking.

Not sure what this means for Media Watch. Russell I expect will have comment at some point.

Oh Scoop has a bit of detail. Interesting.

Has an ugly smell to it.

People getting fired, imprisioned, their sites deleted or blocked and otherwise prevented from expressing their opinions freely whatever they may be.

Organisations wont print some really tame cartoons because they don;t want to “inflame the situation” but will publish highly inflamatory photos to things that happened two years ago and people are already in jail for deliberately inflaming a matter already addressed.

    Interesting times.

    This is not surprising.

Radio New Zealand management are a bit funny about this type of thing.

Just look @ Sean Plunket and Linda Clark’s views on RNZ management.

    Scott.

Why do I see another six-figure round of litigation with all the bills being picked up by the tax-payer? Perhaps I’m being a little too Michael Moore-ish, but it’s hard to ignore that Frewin has been a vocal critic of both the Charter and Government broadcasting policy over the years when he thinks criticism is due… Could it be the “much broader picture” is that he’s pissed off a shareholding Minister or senior manager or two too many?

And perhaps RNZ might consider that he wouldn’t

The interesting bit is that NZ on Air is funding a talk back/news station to have some geezer do a ‘parliament’ report. Next ZB will want the same free ride

Actually the Office of the Clerk pays for Tom Frewen’s parliament show, and its now moved it to Radio Live (?not sure). But NZOA doesn’t fund it.

Oh, come on, that’s a bit melodramatic. What really gets my goat is the sight of a state broadcaster giving a master class in how not to deal with employees – at best, they’ve completely screwed their relationship with another experienced broadcaster; at worse Runn, Grabbit and Sue make another payment on the office BMW courtesy of the taxpayer.
