Iran duping the West

March 6th, 2006 at 1:54 pm by David Farrar

Iran’s nuclear negotiator has talked about how they duped the West by maintaining talks for two years with the EU while completing the installation of equipment for their nuclear programme.

Also Iranian state media invents a quote from former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl about how he agrees the Holocaust never happened.

Every month closer Iran gets to developing nuclear weapons is a month closer to a nuclear conflict in the .

It is ironic that NZ Govt was worried about Iran doing a trade boycott of NZ over some cartoons. Perhaps it should be NZ and other countries launching trade boycotts of Iran until they cease their nuclear programme.

If they were ever stupid enough to threaten Israel with a nuclear weapon, Israel would annihilate them instantly.

Yes, irony is a delicious thing and something the left excell at, as I commented on Saturday.
Some weeks ago the Daily Ablution, I think, reported on the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmanent opposing calls for Iran to go before the UN or something about its nuclear weapons programme. The CND lefties sided with a country amassing nuclear technology when it is awash with oil so they would not be on the same side as George Bush.
Thus, here we see a supposed “warmonger” like George Bush trying to stop the spread of nuclear weapons and an organisation that calls itself the “Campaign for Nuclear Disarmanent” backing the nuclear programme of a country headed by someone who wants to wipe off Israel from the face of the Earth.

Wonderful how predictions of the “lefts” behaviour are constantly being made and when that never materialises no comment is ever made.

Anyway, for the benefit darren and gd (did you really use the term “raghead” or am I just making a surreal premeditated connection with your general views?) your leftist Government fully supported the US and UKs move to refer Iran to the UN Security council on this issue. No doubt you will be appalled that NZ hasn’t taken unilateralist action to bomb Iran to smithereens but hopefully you can rest a little easier in the knowledge that NZs non-proliferation message is consistent.

What I cannot understand is why the Government thinks this issue is of more importance than cartoons…looking forward to darren’s enlightening explaination.

Bob, Iran have already threatened Israel (and America) with destruction. The President of Iran believes in the coming of the Mahdi (the Islamic version of the Messiah), and seems to belive he is preparing the way for him. He would most likely sacrifice millions of his own people if Israel were to nuke Iran, just so that he could destroy Israel with one well placed nuke. It would only take one. Therein lies the danger.

That’s because the “Left” as discussed around here is a largely imaginary entity which was founded centuries ago by freemasons, pagans and the evil galactic lord Xenu. Its goal is “Change over generations” with the final end goal of converting the world to both atheism, Islam and some kind of non-specified eastern mystic claptrap. Not only that, breeding will be phased out in favour of mandatory homosexuality, families will be forced to urinate on each other in public and politically-motivated joke auctions will be an offense punishable by death.

You have to be insane to threaten a more powerful power with destruction if that power has the capability to utterly destroy you. I would have thought dictators should note how effective the democracies have been at defending themslves and destroying the totalitarian power. Indeed I would wager a bet that the democracies have destroyed more people than totalitarian powers. Hence Israel and the US could destroy Iran in a hearbeat.

    ROFL -quote of the day.

Iran know how far they can push the west, especially now that they have backing from Russia and China in the UN security council, in moves to counter US involvement in the middle east. The US is also stretched politically, economically and militarily over its continued involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan. Now is the time to act pugnacious towards the west. They know exactly what they are doing.
Russia has Europe by the balls when it comes to energy supply, and China needs a supply of oil from Iran to feed its new-found capitalism. They are powerful allies for Iran.
The cold war has ended, but world powers are still jostling for power. Nothing new here!

    Charlie,

Deterrence theory only works when both players are rational actors. Mutually Assured Destruction theory between two superpowers that aren’t interested in the extinction of each other is one thing. The big fear was accidental war rather than a surprise attack made on rational choice (which MAD would have prevented)

However, a government which calls for the repeated destruction of one of its neighbours countries, and whose state controlled religious apparatus are prepared to risk the lives of its citizens for a greater spiritual glory and care less about the earthly consequences of their actions would arguably NOT be described as rational.

So with an irrational actor in the mix, its no surprise that people are jittery about a nuclear armed Iran and the short term consequences in the Middle East. Put more simply, it can be argued that the Iranian Govt hates Israel more than it cares about the safety and prosperity of its own people.

A EU countries like Germany who have had a good relationship with Business exports and joint ventures with Iran, would be more worried about losing trade than what Iran gets up to in the Nuclear field.
I could see many EU businesses happy that they squeezed another 2 yrs of profits of of Iran and care little about the consequences!

Can anyone here explain why Iran is the global topic of conversation for beginning to develop nuclear technology, while people remain silent over Israel, the only country in the Middle East with secret stockpiles of nuclear weapons.

“Over the last 50 years, Israel has been directly and indirectly aided and funded in its development of weapons of mass destruction by the United States, France, Norway, Britain and Germany. These powerful nations have neither been forthright nor accountable in their roles in giving one small country in the Middle East enough clout to wipe out most of their neighbors via nuclear holocaust. Such a stance is not only controversial and hypocritical to non proliferation, it is intrinsically detrimental to all other diplomacy and hope(s) concerning peace in the future of the Middle East.”

Reid – I don’t recall Israel ever calling for the destruction of its neighbours or acting in an irrational fashion that suggests it wants to wipe out its neighbours with nuclear weapons. All Israel wants is to be left in peace by its neigbouring Arab states , which isn’t really too much to ask, is it?

In fact, it has sought to do just that, signing peace accords with at least two of its neighbouring states.

Israel is also a democratic nation, which means that there is a seperation of church and state, meaning mad religionists don’t unduly influence government – certainly not its relationship with external nations.

Israel is very simple – it is surrounded by hostile neighbours bent on its destruction, has peace treaties with only two of them (Egypt and Jordan), and Iran is bent on its destruction.

Israel has made it clear it would not be the first user of nuclear weapons in the Middle East -and if I was in Israel, I’d want to deter such an attack, and have the right to vaporise the capital of whatever despotic regime had attacked my country.

Aaron and Scott, your observations, while not uncommon, differ from mine. Israel behaves aggressively and is uncompromising in its objectives. I don’t agree with the popular media-contrived conception that it’s an innocent surrounded by a sea of hatred. While the hatred is real, her govt (but not her people) largely brings it on itself. Remember that Sharon started the intifada in 1999 and since then took provocative actions at every opportunity. His more recent policy of West Bank withdrawel was matched by settlement advancements in other areas. It’s very well documented.

To back up what I say, here’s one of the few critical analyses that make it through the media bias:

“There has been no functioning Middle East peace process for years now. Israel has instead pursued a strategy of unilateral action to redraw borders, annex Palestinian land, and impose its own version of a “solution” to the conflict.”

BTW, the answer for Israel lies in her biblical roots – Arabs are also semites. If she turned back to YHWH and understood her history, she would stand up for the Iraqi people against the horrors caused by the American occupation, which is a criminal act. In so doing she would earn the respect of her neighbours. It won’t happen with the govt she has, but that’s the answer.

Reid – when has Israel ever stated that it had aggressive intent against Iran, Iraq or Syria or any of its neighbours? Never. When have any of those regimes ever given an ounce of free speech to their citizens, or freedom? Never, except Iraq since Hussein was toppled. Israel is a relatively free society – compared to the theocracy of Iran, and the totalitarianism of Syria.

Iraq is not occupied, it has a government of its own and has had elections, and surprisingly even Iraqis acknowledge they have more freedom now than they ever had under Saddam. Yes there is insurgency, but you want to defend the indefensible – the constant murder and torture of the Saddam regime was preferable to the US overthrowing it.

The US intention with Iraq was to remove a tyrannical regime that threatened its neighbours, which had a weapons of mass destruction programme and produce a democracy in the Arab world (heaven forbid!). This would help secure peace in the Middle East and oil supplies. What is wrong with that?
