April 26th, 2006 at 11:23 pm by David FarrarStef puts the debate on female discrimination in what I consider a sensible perspective. A really good post.
Today was the 20th anniversary of Chernobyl . Therefore Trevor Loudon reminds us of Keith Locke’s immortal quote:
“Capitalism cannot be trusted with nuclear power… socialism … would step up nuclear power research in order to make it safe”
PC posts answers to his questions on the biggest issue or threat facing the world, the West and New Zealand.
A hairy geek posts on what “freeview” may mean for Sky. Not pretty if he is right.
And finally for a laugh read Bill Wilmot on why NZ republicans are all guilty of sedition. Wonder if that means I’ll get a cell next to Tim Selwyn

Well, if Locke means democratic socialism a la Sweden, he might be right. If me meant Soviet state socialism, then he’d be wrong. Those are some pregnant ellipses though.
And either way the statement about capitalism and nuclear power may be accurate, but that’s complicated.

Now I’m confused, politics 101 tells me that socialism and communism are two different political ideologies.
And wasn’t the Societ Union always termed Communist?
Now if he’d said that a Soviet communist state was doing just that he’d need his head read. If he was refering to socialism in general, as a seperate ideology from authoritarian communism well….

Actually, according to that, anybody who complains about the government is guilty of sedition. Oops.

Mike – Heh, I love this guy.

Mike: well, that was certainly the opinion of no less an authority than Albert Venn Dicey (the guy who gave us the concept of the “rule of law”). In his “Introduction to the Study of the Law of the Constitution”, he noted that
“any one will see at once that the legal definition of a seditious libel might easily be so used as to check a great deal of what is ordinarily considered allowable discussion, and would if rigidly enforced be inconsistent with prevailing forms of political agitation.”
Which is precisely why this law needs to be repealed.

I’m glad someone else picked up in Wilmot’s idiot post. He doesn’t allow non-bloggers to comment so he obviously isn’t into debating his views just writing shit. Mind you, invoking the right of monarchs and suggesting that anyone who speaks ill of the Queen is guilty of sedition are fairly indefensible (go on Bill, try it). A system that can’t take criticism of itself is merely dictatorship. Please Bill, make an effort to defend or debate your views or I’ll just stop reading.

I totally agree, but that’s not how the kiwiblog folk see the world. Anything left of Nat might as well be Soviet around here.

For goodness sake. Keith Locke made those comments in 1976. I can show you much more ridiculous statements made by former Act Party MPs, but that would be just as meaningless. How absolutely petty…

When I worked in ACT one of our smoking buddies was a Green Party Presser. He wondered why everyone kept wanting to table ‘Why Workers of the World should support the Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan’ and ‘Celebrating the Liberation of Cambodia’ so we gave him a copy.
His reaction – “Jeez, they’re some pretty extreme views!”
Of course, you could argue Keith has moved with the times. After his claim that capitalism couldn’t be trusted with nuclear power and only communists should have it was disproven in 1986 he only wants Iranians to have it now.
