Mike Moore on Globalisation
May 31st, 2006 at 2:10 pm by David FarrarA good speech by former WTO Head Mike Moore to La Trobe University. Some key points:
* growth of freedom and information was also helping consumers demand more from their governments and businesses.
* there has never been a period in the history of our species where we’ve seen freedoms and living standards rise so consistently for most people
*China has undergone huge advances in freedoms of ordinary citizens
* opponents of free trade were effectively arguing to keep the poorest nations of the world in poverty
* the $12 billion the Un wants to fight AIDS, equates to just 12 days of subsidies paid by rich nations to their protected farmers
* open markets means that cosy, crony capitalists with businesses purchasing privileges from politicians against the interests of workers and consumers, doesn’t work

All good stuff. Now let’s fix TRIPS, fix the broken copyright laws in the US and Australia and here, & revise the totally disastrous US patent system. Let’s make any application of “region codes” on audiovisual material a hanging offence, and let’s sit back and enjoy what unfettered creativity can bring us.
Until that day, we won’t have our proper sshare in the global economy – and New Zealand will always be relegated to the “Region 4″ of progress, along with those natural trading partners of ours in Peru and Colombia.

“China has undergone huge advances in freedoms of ordinary citizens”
Yeah. I was driving this morning and listening to a guy on the Leighton Smith show who had had a conversation with a refugee from Red China. The chap suggested to the refugee that he must have found it a relief being in a free country. The Chinese guy responded that on a day to day level, he had found life a lot less regulated and the government a lot less interfering in China than here in NZ. So there you go. Don’t worry about a Chinese invasion, the country according to this guy will probably be better off for it. Funny isn’t it, two political parties that call themselves centre left or right, and between them, they’ve apparently reduced NZ to a country with less personal freedoms than Communist China. What does that say about the average New Zealander’s appreciation of the term “right wing”????? Like some hopelessly confused posters on here who claim to represent the right yet state that sticking to a basic tenet of right wing policy, small government, is an example of over the top “ideological purity”..

Third world growth is exposing the limitations of the capitalist marlet expoitation of resources (not including that of cheap/surplus non unionised labour which makes zoo’s seem like the centres of human ethical philosophy) for profit system.
The EU controlled WTO system more systematically exploits the Third World than they did during 19thC colonialism. Today they bring “civilisation” by demanding access to services markets, this in return for ending agricultural good export subsidies. Also by handing back SOME of their WTO trade system order profits as generous foreign aid.
The Americans tariff timber for their housing market from Canada and hand this money over to American firms (so they can maintain market share).
Barbarians.
China’s advance is partly based on dirty floating their currency to ensure investment planning security (we should do the same as these “civilised people” and given we are in CER, it should be a tag to the Oz dollar, thus akin to the EEC system).

One of the most salient points I take from this is that globally we are spending $1 billion a day in subsidies to farmers, so that we can pay more for our food, to protect them from cheaper imports. It

Redbaiter, your insight is unique and mostly hilarious.
I read a very good book a while back called Globalisation and its Discontents by Stiglitz. Its pretty critical of the World Bank and IMF but still argues that globalisation is both inevitable and potentially positive but that the major problems have been in the slavish implementation of Washington consensus policies regardless of the circumstances. The key message I took away from this book is that the problems are usually to do with sequencing and pacing e.g. you don’t deregulate currency without ensuring central banking is up to scratch etc.
Moore’s comments are reasonable enough but I think Philip’s points above about the various institutional impediments that are largely ignored are very valid.

“I read a very good book a while back . . .”
Read a book? Without moving your lips?
Vote:You must be a lefty.

DPF,
Are you not embarrassed at this kind of comment from your amen chorus? If nothing else convinces me that the left wing is the truth, it is this non-stop torrent of abuse that passes for argument from the right.
Go to bed woppo. You lost it on that one.

Oh for fuck’s sake logix, what a dreary little sod you are.
Vote:Just to ram the point home, you can bet that Master Baiter moves his lips when listening to Leighton Smith. Got it? Good.

And aren’t you embarrased by the psycho-troll lefties around here? They’re such paragons of civility, intellectual rigour and persuasive power…

Woppo – I don’t think that’s ramming it home, so…
Logix – He said that if you *don’t* move your lips when you read, you must be a leftie. He was not abusing the left, he was doing the opposite of that. Op-po-site. Yeeees.

Woppo:
Have we learned a valuable lesson? Any kind of joke – let alone one that requires a little thought to comprehend – is just asking for trouble in the blogisphere. Then again I’m of the school that says when you’re getting crapped on by the loony left and the rabid right, more power to you.
Vote:June 1st, 2006 at 10:31 am
I thought woppo’s comment was ironic myself and showed considerable constraint in resisting the temptation to comment on Redbaiter’s reference to Leighton Smith…

Why is “Craig Ranapia” always so bilious and savage on this blog?
Anyone?
It srikes me as impolitic and showing a lack of common good manners.
What would his Mr.Brash say about him?
Best,
James
