Parody Postcards

Jordan has a couple of parody postcards up (of the front). One is actually very funny, the other less so.

Heh this one is well done, with a nice dig at the GST. I laughed when I saw it, and that is the sort of postcard I would e-mail onto someone or blog..

This one is pretty stupid though. The level of taxation is a policy, it is ranked as the second most important issue by voters. Plus the vast majority of the country do not agree with Labour that tax cuts are unaffordable, so as an effective postcard this one will not be effective. It is just whiney and will only appeal to members of Young Labour, or AUSA activists

Remind me of the ages of Labour again.
And parody or not I’m fairly sure Jordan doesn’t have authorisation for either the National party logo or the parlimentry crest.
June 8th, 2006 at 1:58 pm
Anyone know the rules about the use of Parliamentary crests on things like these (some of the other parody billboards I’ve seen have changed the authorisation – occasionally in rather hilarious ways).

Can you tell Labour has no idea?
Attempting to win a policy debate by infantile pouting is a sign of a party and a front bench due for a long time out (of government, that is).
June 8th, 2006 at 2:14 pm
I think the message on post card 2 sums it up
“Sign of a party and Leader due for retirement”
I suppose “Digger Don” thinks I’ll give it one last shot before I’m given a matching set of luggage and a one way ticket to the Gold Coast!

Cadmus:
LOL… As I’ve said before, I think any politician who is going to go out and try and campaign on dog-whistle ageism needs a quick refresher course in demographics. Especially when your finance bovver boy ‘aint exactly spring lamb.
June 8th, 2006 at 2:45 pm
You’re right David. The GST one is actually very funny. The other one though is just lame. It has no message apart from “oh no! Not freedom – thats so 1980′s”.
June 8th, 2006 at 2:56 pm
Also David, you refer to Young Labour and AUSA activists as though they are different people. Silly mistake my friend
June 8th, 2006 at 3:11 pm
Cadmus, do you even know what a Digger is?
June 8th, 2006 at 3:14 pm
Pretty lame really – the election billboards provided far richer satirical material.
Craig – while I agree that ageism is a poor line of attack, I doubt Nat supporters could feel too comfortable on their moral high ground describing it as a ‘dog-whistle’.
Mainly because, in my view, the pea was being nearly blown out of the dog-whistle by Don in the last election. Admittedly, not on the subject of age.
Still, pot calling kettle and all that.
June 8th, 2006 at 3:53 pm
In case you haven’t noticed, Cadmus, more than half of NZFirst’s MPs–including the Rt Hon–are in their sixties.
Bit rich for you to try and make age an issue.

I do feel the need to point out that withstanding talk about taxation, affordability, policies etcetera, there was one thing that really bothered me about the National postcard. Where are the lemons?!?
If I were going to do an ad like that, there’d be a lemon squeezer and a bucket of squished lemons nearby. Sure… they could be squeezing them inside … but … *wants lemons*
June 8th, 2006 at 4:50 pm
“Where are the lemons?!?”
Didn’t you notice the National logo down in the bottom right?

The lady of the house got an interesting piece of mail today from David Bennett, National MP for Hamilton East. It can only be described as a push poll. I guess the Nats are trying to increase their profile amongst the womenfolk; we could not figure out why she got one and I did not. Maybe the parliamentary budget they used for it did not stretch that far. Anyway, here are the questions:
1. Do you believe the Government should lower individual tax rates to provide Kiwis with better incentives to work hard and get ahead?
2. Do you support or oppose the Treaty of Waitangi becoming supreme law?
(that question made me laugh out loud)
3. Do you think the amount of time the Police spend on road safety, as opposed to front-line policing is: (multi choice)
4. Do you support solo parents who receive the Domestic Purposes Benefit having to make themselves available for part-time work once their youngest child turns six?
5. How well do you think the new NCEA qualifications framework is working?
6. Do you think the drinking age should: (multi choice)
(first non stupid question)
7. Do you agree with National’s policy that all money taken in petrol tax should be spent on building and maintaining roads?
(didn’t they previously turn winston down for this back in 98/99?)
8. Which party or parties do you seriously consider voting for at elections?
9. Which party do you normally vote for?

Why is anyone replying to cadmus?

I agree with the second postcard- National is a one trick pony – “Tax cutz will solve everything!”
If they had some sensible policy to address the issues facing NZ, providing a well thought-out alternative to Labour, maybe more people would have voted for them?
I suspect they are getting lessons from their US Republican advisers- win the elections on populist yet bollocks issues like gay marriage and then put in place your true shady neo-con agenda.
The refusal to rule out further state asset sales is in my mind an admission that National still has a disastrous economic agenda of slash-and-burn neo-liberalism, similar to the failed policies of the early 1990s, and they desperately want to hide this from the public…

Most people think to look on the party’s website to research their policies. You should try it some time.

Not funny. Labour and Greenie people are just not funny. Your spine just shivers from the smarm.
June 8th, 2006 at 9:29 pm
I think I feel dizzy at the amount of spin being applied in the second “takeoff” ad.
Actually, spin is too kind, sheer infantile misdirection, but probably plays well with the average labour voter who hasn’t the ability to think for themself anyway. Can’t afford, sure, the cullender can’t afford to admit what a thumping liar and fuckwit he is. Hey err…, witty, but for lemons, you need to look at the liarbour front bench, not a one with half an idea between the lot.
Bad tempered, yes, but eventually I get sick of the absolute dishonesty and lack of any originality of the labour sycophants.
June 8th, 2006 at 9:40 pm
It was Labour who focused In Work income support and tax relief for FAMILIES.
So guess why women voted Labour.
The chances are schools will be running more fund raising after any National tax cuts. Also it’s clear those feeling wealthy now with rising house prices, should consider paying off those mortgages if they think National will get in. National’s borrowing would mean rising interest rates.

Is it just me, or does the kid on the right look kind of munted?
June 9th, 2006 at 11:32 am
True, but Don Brash is leading National, he is the face of National, NZ First MP’s are just that, BTW in power. OK the airbrush job on Don made him look good, good teeth, a touch up of that pencil neck, open shirt.
Trouble is Don needs every assistance he can get. The Rt Hon Winston Peters doesn’t!
June 9th, 2006 at 11:43 am
I have been assured the photo is recent and not retouched or airbrushed. You are confusing Don with Helen.
June 9th, 2006 at 12:31 pm
Not retouched or airbrushed?. Surely that leaves out all the modern technology available.
Its possible to run software over an image file that will tell if it has been altered in any way .
This web page has a run down of how to do it.

Has anybody the time to try it!

McPhee:
As any wedding photographer can tell you, the most flattering effect of all is soft, even light. Strange but true – despite the evidence of your passport and driver’s licence, not everyone needs the full resources of Weta Digital to photograph well.

“…eventually I get sick of the absolute dishonesty and lack of any originality of the labour sycophants.”
But you are happy with the National sycophants I take it?
In case you haven’t noticed, every commenter here, left or right, is a fucking hypocrite. We all think the way we do for a variety of reasons, most of which are completely illogical/emotional whatever (the biggest indicator of how a person votes is how their parents voted, for exaample). When the Nats are in power, and make fuck ups, there will be people defending them at all costs, just as the lefties do here, and in other blogs. Frankly, this is what makes it so interesting.
Have you ever stopped to think what a failure our political system is, in that we comment on these things that we can’t change, get quite het up about it fact, but they have such an important impact on our lives? Perhaps that is a great strength of the system? Elections are well and good, but changing the mindset of the political elites is proving/has proved far more difficult.
Ed, if originality is what you are looking for, try a creative writing course. Political discourse is stuck between pretty narrow lines, you don’t get far advocating innovative solutions because they rarely get you elected. The entertaining thing about comments on blogs is that they are allowed to take their course and provide snippets of real brilliance (and complete shit as well of course). I like the way another thread went from the Iraqi Al Qaeda guy to slagging off David lange – brilliant! The Guardian’s football blog more often than not descends into a rant against George W. They are just like real conversations, in other words.
Phew.
I would write more but the bar in the boardroom is now open.
June 9th, 2006 at 9:24 pm
Saying the country can’t afford tax cuts is like saying it can’t afford to reduce rape or theft…the usual lies from the left.
June 10th, 2006 at 12:27 am
Well now we know the lefties strategy until the next election, copy and attempt satire on anything National does.
Sounds like some people have run out of ideas and are panicking. Sounds good to me.
