Request to NZPA

June 28th, 2006 at 11:08 am by David Farrar

NZPA provide an excellent service reporting on the House and select committees – they have to cover even the boring parts as the sort of media source of record.

But of late I’ve noticed they don’t always report the vote numbers, when it is a split vote. And this is of considerable interest. Even better would be to report the way each party voted, if this is not obvious from the vote numbers.

As an example the bill which will place a time limit on historical Treaty claims passed its first reading last night. But the NZPA reports do not say who voted for and against it. I’d guess 111 votes in favour and 10 votes against but would like to know for sure.

According to their speech on Scoop, the Maori Party voted for it, to let iwi have their say. I expect they’ll be voting against the second reading, though.

THe actual record is clerk.parliament.govt.nz/hansard – Dave McGee is getting it online quicker than ever before.

Looks like Tuesday’s hansard is still not up. Is this the only place where votes are recorded?

In the United States Andrian Holovaty launched a project for the Washington Post that records Congress votes. You can then browse the database to see how members voted for various issues.

The Washington Post database is updated each day and looking at the Hansard web pages it looks feasible for a similar project to be done for NZ. However, if it takes this long for the Hansard records to make it on to the web, and there is no other source, then the usefulness of the project drops. It would still prove a useful record of how each party voted. I’m a little bit surprised something like this doesn’t already exist?
