Wellington – the peace city?
June 26th, 2006 at 5:22 am by David FarrarI can only agree with Cr John Morrison that the proposal to call Wellington “Peace CIty” is “dripping wet, bleeding heart dribble”.
It’s almost vomitous in its appeal. Hell it makes me want to pick up a gun and shoot any Councillor who votes for it. I mean, please, how patronising can you get.
Not that I am against peace per se. But Chamberlain was quite keen on peace in our time also, and doesn’t always work out that way. And the so called peace movement were diasasterously wrong with their advocacy of unilateral disarmament during the Soviet era.
This is patronising politically correct bullshit of the worst order. And it amazes me how this can be almost slipped through without consultation.

Sounds like the sort of name give in North Korea- usually an oxymoron…

Anyone opposed to this name change is a vicious warmonger.

He can’t do it. Waitakere is the official Peace City http://lindsaymitchell.blogspot.com/2006/04/peaceful-easy-feeling.html

lame lame lame. We have a brand – it’s quite good in my opinion. And we obviously have a ton of ‘peace’ stuff already. Waste of bloody time.

I wonder if the vicious thugs who come in to Wellington on Friday and Saturday night’s to mug merry-makers and kidnap foreign tourists will buy into the catchy “peace City” phrase.

“And in other news, the High Court in Wellington today found a rightwing extremist blogger guilty of sedition.
David P Farrar, 17 1/2, defended his blog entry by saying he only felt like shooting Wellington City Councillors, and that wasn’t actually going to do it.
It was a protest against Wellington naming itself Peace City, Farrar added, before he was led away to serve a preventative detention sentence on Stewart Island. Farrar was later taken to hospital as he broke down after learning that Stewart Island has no broadband Internet access.”

I guess it is better than war city I suppose. Go knows that hideous place is waging war on the rest of New Zealand stealing money from their mouths.

Oh for fucks sake!. Are drugs cheap and plentiful in Wellington ?. Obviously there are no more pressing problems for the Wellington city council to sort out, prehaps they would like to start on Dorkland.

The other side’s case:

Apparently the Dom wasn;t interested

Thanks Lyndon, that sounds way less gay than how DPFs article portrayed it. Shame the Council didn’t see fit to explain the endeavour properly.

Gee… some stats in there that Ross might be interested in for another thread….

Maybe it is intended to have a whole new image for Wellington with Keith Locke as Mayor, and the Gender Neutrality Tool as the key to the city.
Vote:June 26th, 2006 at 3:14 pm
Thanks for that lyndon.
What a fucking farce. DPF – what the fuck were you thinking? So much for intellectual discussion. What we have here is your classic uninformed bullshit right up there with Bill O’Reilly’s pseudo ‘moral outrage’ bleating. Well done to you and the Dom for dragging the debate down to that level.
The worst thing of all is that much of the point of the idea is lost:
“behind the image are some sobering truths about the violence tearing apart our families and communities and eroding our peaceful image. Every year in New Zealand over 7,000 children are abused in the home. On average, 10 of these children die. About 30% of women have reported being subjected to physical or sexual violence, and there are over 40,000 reported violent crimes in the community every year.”
So you all mindlessly whine about a nonexistant issue: ‘pc-ness’, which never even existed, ignoring the crux of the whole issue, all for your own political one-upsmanship while simultaneously bleating on about the abhorant child abuse statistics’ and bitching about how nothing’s been done about it – all the while making every effort to tear down one of the ways to help deal with the problem. Un-fucking-believeable.
What a fucking waste of time. No intellectual analysis, just mindless bleating and propaganda, I can only assume that you’re doing it in the hopws that such half truths will cross over into the mainstream… so much for democracy. Well done.
You should be ashamed.

Bilgepump, you don’t sound like a very peaceful person at all.
Have a little lie down and a nice cup of tea. Whilst you are enjoying your break, I invite you to reflect on what the terms ‘practice what you preach’ and ‘naivety to the point of wilful stupidity’ mean.
Enjoy your break!

I can’t see what bilgepump is getting so worked up about.
As if changing the motto of a city will make these people stop to ponder the meaning of the phrase, before bashing their children to hospitalisation.
If that was the case, why stop at Wellington when we could change the name of the country to “New Peaceland”? That would immediately stimulate a peace revolution, and we could all hold hands in the fields as a united people and sway to soft guitar-led peace carols all day.
This initiative is almost as hollow as the dog-microchipping affair.

How come no-one ever wants to name their town “Bad Motherfucker City?”

I see Thorndon has renamed itself ‘ Hatred’ ever since labour won the last election.
Vote:As a thought arent some Maori names translated into ‘blood on water’ or some such. And then there is Corpus Christi Texas.
What ever happened to ‘Our Lady of the Bouquet of Sorrows’

Sorry Lyndon, I read the article and my gag reflex upon reading about ‘Wellington – Peace City’ re-branding justification, is still making me writhe in mental agony.
It is the kind of sloganeering I imagine first year Sociology students to come up with. I notice Wellington Central Mp, Marion Hobbs has signed the statement, ’nuff said.
And while NZ has much to be concerned about regarding child abuse and domestic violence, I don’t expect abusers will stop in their tracks and reform their wicked ways because they live in “Peace City”.
The article goes on further to extol the virtues of living in a Nuclear Free City and how progressive NZ is when it comes to Womens Rights and how we are a beacon for the rest of humanity.
Seriously? Does the rest of the world really give NZ that much worthy consideration? More likely NZs
Vote:high political moralising about our supposedly Nuclear Free Status etc, is nothing more Trivial Pursuits questions to the rest of the world.

My wife went to a colour therapist who said pink was a good colour for calming violent tendencies.I suggest Wellington particuarly Parliament is painted pink and a law is past to require any person guilty of violence to live in a pink painted dwelling. Also that all prison cells be painted pink and the prisoners wear pink overalls with white arrows
Vote:June 27th, 2006 at 1:17 pm
Painting parliament pink? If Labour got any pinker they would have to invent a new colour.

Bilgepump – I always enjoy personal attacks from people who won’t even reveal their name. So very credible.
One can be in favour of reducing domestic violence, yet still think calling Wellington a peace city is an idiotic idea which will achieve nothing.
Vote:June 27th, 2006 at 3:00 pm
GD. It actually works. About twenty years ago several Police Stations painted out a cell hot pink. Violent prisoners were placed in it and it was amazing just how quickly they pacified.
