The passion of the Mel

July 30th, 2006 at 9:43 pm by David Farrar

Everyone knows Mel Gibson and his film “The Passion of the Christ”. And Mel claimed the film was not anti-semitic and neither was he.

As is often the case, the truth comes out with some alcohol. On Friday Mel Gibson gets pulled over for drink driving and he exclaims:

- Fucking Jews
- The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world
- Are you a Jew? (to the police deputy)

No wonder he produces his own films. All the other hollywood companies are controlled by those “fucking jews”!

Drudge carried this yesterday. To be taken with a huge grain of salt.

However Hone Harawira speaking in Parliament on the current mideast crisis said this

“The violence perpetrated by the Jews must stop”

Since he said it in Maori it’s not anti semitic.

I flip through the ol dictionary here… here we go under “anti-semitism”, oh look a picture of Hone.

His comments were one sided, completely biased, targeted a relgion and are liable to incite anti-Jewish sentiment in a nation known for it’s poulation attacking the graves on other New Zealanders based on their relgion after New Zealand poloticians make such anti-Jew statements publicly.

Mel Gibson is a Christian fundamentalist nutter. If you didn’t know from his last film about his anti-semetic beliefs you do now. Stick him in the gallery along with the holocaust deniers and the rest.

Gibson is the sort of guy, it appears from another thread, people would like to see running the Anglican church. These were the same people that were packing the cinemas for the Passion of Christ.

It is ironic, however, the amount of stick that Hone’s comments get. Given that anyone who dares criticise Isreal’s actions is labeled an anti-semite I fail to see what your outrage is here. Isreal is a country set up for the Jewish diaspra after hundreds of years of Christian persecution in Europe culminating in Hitlers holocausts. So it is accurate to say the killing in Lebanon is mainly being carried out by Jews. It would not be fair to criticise the Jewish religion or Jews in general as a result. This would be as unfair as criticising Christians for Mel and his like or Muslims for Al Quaida. There are plenty Jews and Isrealis who abhore the current state of affairs just as there were plenty Palistinians (a majority of whom are Muslim) who were prepared to recognise Isreal’s right to exist as a state. After the latest atrocity in Lebanon one can only imagine those numbers are dropping off from the hights where President Abbas was confident of a reforendum victory, especially after the latest series of attrocities in Lebanon.

    Noddy:

Um, as I’ve said before I’ve never been a fan of Mel Gibson and The Passion of The Christ has the dubious distinction of (literally) making me puke.

But, as a recovering alcoholic, I’m not really comfortable posturing on the moral high ground here. There are too many people out there who remember the truly vile things I said and did while off my face for that game to work.

And just for the record, Noddy, like DPF I don’t think criticism of the state of Israel is ipso facto anti-Semitic. Getting your face all over Al-Jazeera saying things like “Jews are the cancer, the AIDS, of the world” and there will be no peace until the Jews are ‘destroyed’ certainly is.

As for Mr. Harawira – well Mel Gibson isn’t a legislator in this country. Hone Harawira is – and perhaps he should really think twice before standing up in the House of Representatives and pissing out his inflamatory and factually-challenged rhetoric.

And here’s a thought for you, Noddy: In the 2001 census, 98 percent of Maori who stated a religious affiliation were Christians of some stripe. (Who knows how many others, like myself, are religiously observant but ticked the “decline to state” box for whatever reason. Personally, I don’t live in a theocracy and my religion isn’t any of the government’s fracking business.) If my memory serves, Mr. Harawira himself is a devout Ratana. Now, how do you think he would react if, say, Don Brash stood up in a debate on child abuse and said “it’s time for these murders by Ratana and other Christians to stop”?

Craig, well put all round. People say and do things that are quite out of character when they are really drunk. I don’t think it really reflects what they think when sober. Or it’s a pretty distorted reflection, through a twisted mirror.

That is not to say that Mel is not antisemitic. He may well be, but I wouldn’t base the judgement on things said whilst drunk. Supposedly the Passion of the Christ (which I could think of no reason to see) contains slurs on the Jews of Christ’s time. It’s one possible interpretation of a highly mythologized time.

I can’t see that as convincing evidence of antisemitism, a word that seems to have degenerated from it’s original horribly nasty meaning of ‘Jew hating’ to now mean ‘Disagreeing with Israeli government plans’. It’s quite possible that Mel, like most of the planet, is an antisemite in this new sense. And an alcoholic with the foul mouth and temper that goes with it. There’s nothing good about that, though. I suppose it gives him some kind of moral high ground that at least he’s got a problem with a *legal* substance, unlike many rich famous actors.

I would say it was adhorent. I am not sure where we disagree here, Craig, except you seem a little more understanding of Mel than myself. For those who question Gibson’s antisemitic credentials I suggest you to a little more research into the sect to which he belongs. In particular they oppose the 2nd Vatican Council’s affirnation that “that the Jews of the time of Christ, taken indiscriminately, and all Jews today are no more responsible for the death of Christ than Christians”.

    Fred,

The rockets Hezzbollah are firing are typically about 1-2m long. The spent shell of one can be picked up in one hand. Lethal only if you are very unlucky. The firing of these things across the border ONLY started AFTER the IDF attacked South Lebanon. AFTER a couple of IDF patsies were captured by Hezbollah inside Lebanon.

By contrast Israel, having the fifth largest Air Force in the world, the largest army in the Middle East and access to unlimited US funding and technology has killed in excess of 500 Lebanese, only a small number being actual Hezzbollah. And this is just the known death toll, many more are still buried in rubble. Large numbers of children and elderly are among the victims, blown to bloody scorched shreds, or crushed when entire buildings are violently collapsed about them.

They blast a well-known UN post and called it an “accident”. The day before they score a direct hit on the Red Cross atop an ambulance and called it an accident. Today they kill 60 more in Qana and call this an accident too. At this rate we will be needing a whole new definition of the word accident. Given what the Israeli govt is doing let

Contrary to your claim quoted below, the Hezzies have been rocketing northern Israeli civilian targets from Sth Leb. since Israel withdrew from Sth Leb. in Oct 2000.
Hakmas have resumed targeting Israeli civilians with rockets since Israel recently withdrew from Gaza in an attempt to appease.
    It didn’t work.

    Silly Gryf says

    He lies….

    Aerospaceweb says
“Once Israel completed it’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon in 2000, Hezbollah again reoccupied positions along the border to fire rockets south……the organisation has also continued to receive a variety of more advanced rockets of greater range and destructive power from its sponsors in Iran”.
In addition to the Katyusha, newer models are the Fajr-3 with 45kg warhead, the Fajr-5 with 90kg warhead, the Shahin-1&2 with 190kg warheads and the Zelzal-2 with 600kg warhead & a range of 200 kms bringing cities in central and southern Israel within range.

Fred seems to have acquired the ruling classes natural ability to twist and spin facts with no shame whatsoever.

    1. The vast majority of Hez rockets (of the thousands fired) are of a relatively small, primitive type that have a very small kill radius. This morning Hez fired 200 rockets, and yet only ONE person was killed. I have a picture of a friend of mine standing hold the spent shell of such a rocket in one hand. I’m not linking to it because it is was sent to me privately. Contrast this to the 2000lb precision bombs the IDF have at it’s disposal, the kind that demolishes entire apartment blocks. Nor do these rockets contain white phosphorous, in contrast to persistent reports from Lebanon that the IDF are illegally using such weapons.

    2. The IDF and Hez have been exchanging low level fire ever since the Israeli’s withdrew from Lebanon. Everyone knows that. But the huge escalation of rocket fire from Hez in the last two weeks has occured in response to IDF attacks.

Twist all you like Fred, but the vast majority of opinion worldwide has strongly condemmed Israel in the last two weeks. The only reason why these murderous attacks continue is that the United States of Israel have been backing them all the way.

The Israelis will not allow their civilians to be rocketed and for that rocketing to continue without end because the Hezzie launcher is deliberately sited very near to Lebanese civilians.
They attack the launcher, if that happens often enough during this war the civilians the Hezzies are using will get hit.

Reality all a bit much for a socialised bed wetter, is it Gryfy?

The Hezzies know the Israelis try to avoid civilians while they themselves deliberately target civilians.
The Israelis are there because the Leb. govt refused to use its 10,000 strong army to keep the Hezzie rockets out of Sth Leb.
In a major development two nights ago on ‘Lateline’ in Aust., the Leb Foreign Minister admitted that the Leb govt supports the Hezzie rocket attacks on Israel.

Try and figure out why the Israelis would target civilians.
Well done, see how there is no advantage at all to Israel in attacking Leb civilians for the sake of it.
Beware of being fisked ‘ol mate,
with any luck Hezzies make up quite a number of the ‘civilian’ casualties

Hezzie launchers and storages in and near civilian housing means civilians will inevitably be victims when these targets are attacked. But you already knew that.

Bad luck ross, Israel will defend itself.

Today 11 Israeli’s have been killed in the course of Israel “defending itself”. Given that Hizbollah kidnapped (not killed) two Israeli soldiers, negotiation might have prevented those 11 deaths (and no doubt there’s more to come).

Defending yourself is one thing, invading and occupying a sovereign nation, most of us know that’s not going to resolve anything.

If Mel Gibson had said what he said about ANYONE else but the Jews, NOTHING would have been heard about it.

Oh, to quote Penn and Teller, BULLSHIT! Gibson has developed into Hollywood’s answer to Prince Philip over the years and (yes) there’s been plenty of ink spilled over his equally vile diatribes about homosexuals, feminists, blacks, etc. So please spare me any rubbish about how Gibson is a victim of the Vast Zionist Conspiracy.

BULLSHIT yourself. Gibson may have set tongues wagging among the nattering classes…but this was instant, worldwide, saturation, lead the news coverage for several days. Yah dreaming if you think we cannot tell the difference.

Besides, the comments he made were not on some stage to an audience, or an interview to be broadcast…they were angry drunken piffle made on the spur of the moment from one person to another. The kind of shit that goes down all day every day all over the world. Yet SOMEONE decided it was going to LEAD the fucken news. It is you who insult our intelligence with your snivelling evasions.

Gryf, if Gibson had said what he said but about Afro-Americains he would have been treated in exactly the same manner. (There’s also a bit of context because of The Passion).

The difference is that he chose Jews not Afro-Americans, just like no one cooks up conspiracy theories about Afro-Americans having undue influence over the US goverment.

“F*****g Americans… The Americans are responsible for all the wars in the world.” Gibson then asked the deputy, “Are you an American?”

You’re right of course Gryf, of course it only made the headlines because it’s criticism of the Jews that’s verbotten. As a matter of fact, it’s very very convenient that such a story got such airtime at this particular time, isn’t it? I guess someone knew that a desecration of a Jewish cemetary wouldn’t quite cut the mustard this particular time.

There are numerous videos of Hizbo rocket pads directly beside/on top of apartment buildings, and rocket trucks parking right next to houses. Gryf, I don’t think you understand that the Hizbos ARE civilians. Look at Qana(death toll now down to 24), a rocket pad was right behind it. Israel hit the rocket pad, and several hours later the Hezbo munitions store in that building exploded. Also, only women and children were in the building (and weapons!). Last time I checked it took a man and a women to procreate, so where were the husbands?? They were outside firing rockets!! Trying to distinguish civilian casualties from Hizbullah casualties is nearly impossible. The bottom line is that Israel does not intentionally target civilians, it does not help their cause to do so. On the other hand, the Hizbos INTENTIONALLY try to kill civilians, and rejoice when they do. It’s sick. The world did not want to acknowledge the threat of the Nazis before WW 2, just as it does not want to acknowledge the threat of Islamic fascism now, but it will.
