Buy NZ owned not made

The Greens look to be changing the “Buy NZ made” campaign into a “Buy NZ owned”. Yes, you can get your products made in an overseas sweatshop, but so long as the company selling them is NZ owned, this may now qualify.
Now personally I don’t care (as I think local manufacturers survive on the basis of their quality, not on the basis of patriotism), but for those who think the Greens were about promoting local manufacturing, they will be sorely disappointed.

“Yes, you can get your products made in an overseas sweatshop”
Quite correct. There was a NZ furniture company that closed down its manufacturing in NZ due in part as it was costing $80,000pa to dispose of sawdust. Its sales offices etc didn’t close & NZ ownership didn’t change but the manufacturing is now done in China. Presumably the sawdust can now be dumped in a nearby river.
Now the company would be part of the Greens love in. What ever the greens are they are not an environmental movement.

“as I think local manufacturers survive on the basis of their quality, not on the basis of patriotism”.
Used to be the case, now out of date.
Strict quality supervision by NZ parent means equal quality products produced with tiny labour costs come out of Asia.
Good example are MacPac tents made in Vietnam. The price of the tents didn’t come down but manufacturer margins went ballistic.

It’s an ineffective marketing subsidy insisted upon by a party that appears to know nothing about business or marketing. I wonder how they plan to track effectiveness? I see Tariana is weighing in, which should make for an entertaining dust-up, if nothing else. http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/PA0608/S00189.htm

The article only says it’s being considered…
… and I don’t think your sweatshop example is what they’re talking about…
…if Icebreaker uses NZ designers, and NZ materials, should they not get at least some of the benefit?

Sue Bradford says: “New Zealand manufacturers and workers can be assured that only products actually made in New Zealand will be entitled to carry the New Zealand Made labelling, as specified by legislation.”

“The Green MP responsible for the Buy Kiwi Made scheme, Sue Bradford, says she is making her proposal clearer so such companies (Icebreaker) can be associated with it.”
