Aussie Spammer fined $6.5 million
October 28th, 2006 at 12:23 pm by David FarrarExcellent. One of the more annoying Australian spammers got fined $6.5 million by the Australian Federal Court. This will act as a huge deterrance to other spammers down under. It was the first prosecution under Australia’s anti-spam laws.
The NZ anti-spam bill may pass into law this year. It is No 16 on the order paper. Depends how much urgency there is.

Spamming is a form of trespass and should be dealt with not only by fines but also imprisonment is the worst cases. There should be restrictions on their ability to send material.

Tell me someone, how do the spammers get caught? I have been reporting spam to my ISP on a daily basis (around five, sometimes more, a day) but it seems my ISP cannot trace and stop them.
Vote:So, if the anti spam bill is designed to stop spam, it seems to me that someone has the means to trace the spammers. But if my ISP cannot even do this, I can’t see how the spamming can stop. And some (most? all?) spams appear to be offshore.
Can anyone enlighten me please? thanks.

It is likely there will be a central reporting point, and they will be able to trace some of the spam and work with overseas counterparts to prosecute them.

I wonder how many hours of community service he will be sentenced to (and not bother to perform} in default of paying the fine.
