2006 Census Stats

I love all the data you can get from the census. It’s invaluable for politics, for polling and just for knowing about your country. Hell I’d have them annually if I could 🙂

A few interesting facts from the 2006 Census:

* We have 4,027,947 people living in 1,471,746 dweelings which is an average of 2,74 people per dwelling
* 14% of NZers identify as Maori
* The Asian population has increased 50%, and is now 8.8%
* A massive 11.1% of respondents went out of their way to write New Zealander as their ethnic group (this is much higher than I expected – 2% in 2001)
* NI pop is up 8.1% and SI 6.7% which should mean an extra NI seat unless they have had a disproportionate number swap to the Maori roll
* We have 744 North American Indians in NZ, 201 Pitcairn Islanders, 108 Estonians, and 39 Falkand Islanders.
* The Iwi with the most members are Ngapuhi at 122,211, Ngati Porou 71,907 and Nga Tahu 49,185.
