Frank Haden Add this story to Scoopit!.

Very sad to read that Frank Haden is dying of prostrate cancer. The sad irony being that he has campaigned for 15 years or so for the Health Ministry to do prostate cancer screening in the same way they do breast cancer screening.

They also have a long interview with him, about his career.

My thoughts are with Frank and his family. He is a good, principled man never afraid to call a spade a spade.

‘Words’, his weekly column in The DomPost is sorely missed already. His indefatigable efforts to unmask weak teachers and academics will be remembered.

    Best wishes, dear Frank.

  2. Graeme Edgeler Says:

Was always a fan of the words columns, especially.

    I don’t usually correct, but it’s ‘prostate’.

I don’t know what prostrate cancer is, maybe it’s what Greg the Wiggle has?

  3. Murray Says:

Frank is not qualified for special consideration or even equal consideration in this country.

    He has a penis.

  4. hayman Says:

So he campaigned for prostate cancer testing but never got tested himself?
Maybe it was just another ‘issue’ to fill the space allocated to him every week, but actually believe it applied to him that was another story. Not like he was a middle aged man or anything.
Wonder what other issues were just more bullshit.

  5. Prolix Says:

I’m sorry, did I miss something? What about Haden’s personal responsibility?

  6. Darryl Ward Says:

Men’s health issues are simply not given the same priority as women’s health issues because we value men’s lives less than women’s lives.

Men are the last to leave sinking ships on the only ones who can be conscripted to go to war.

True, there has been some belated publicity about prostate cancer, but nothing even approaching the coverage given to women’s diseases. We won’t see the Sky Tower swathed in blue lights to raise the profile of diseases that affect only men!

I woudld like to hope that the achievement of equity in health could be Frank’s greatest legacy.

  8. Stephen Franks Says:

Frank does not whine about his fate or the lack of prostate screening. He is angered, as always, by hypocrisy and dishonesty – in this area the hypocrisy of health priorites determined by political correctness, not health outcomes, and the dishonesty he sees in the offical reasons for that political discrimination.
Frank is a man. In his book men do not whine.

  9. Fred Says:

    Lefty scumbags…..they’re everywhere.

  10. Kent Parker Says:

I don’t think you can entirely lay the blame on health authorities. Men themselves, do not look after their health as well as women. Some leave it to their ‘better half’ to manage their health for them. Women are much more likely to visit a doctor, while men just go ‘oh, she’ll be right’.

  11. mikeybill Says:

He’s 78 and he has a terminal condition?

Isn’t that sort of normal for most of the world’s population at that age?

Blaming his impending death on some sort of feminist cabal is just nuts. He’s an old man, near the end of his life.

    This is news how?

  12. Ruth Says:

Exactly Mikey. I’m sorry to hear anyone is dying of cancer, but for this old goat to blame women is just typical.

Look at the success of Breat Cancer Awareness MOnth:

    As Business Week says:

“During October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, major corporations sell rose-colored goods to help raise awareness and funds for the disease. …

The broad range of corporations involved shows how successful the “color as brand symbol” strategy can be. It is questionable whether a traditional brand using the strategy would be as successful, but the number of companies willing to introduce a special pink edition of its widget in support of curing breast cancer is almost limitless….

The success of the pink campaign is easy to understand: It’s a perennial win-win concept. Breast cancer patients and researchers can benefit from the funds raised. Consumers can engage in feel-good shopping. And, from a business standpoint, some companies even see a surge in sales or orders…”

Men should look to their own selves if they can’t promote their issues in the free market.

  13. MY Says:

Paraphrasing Ruth Richardson’s words (applied to another brilliant man, however) – Mikey and Ruth don’t deserve to tie Mr Haden’s shoelaces.

I can safely say that those same corporations would NOT be so keen to put the same money behind men’s diseases.

Society is far more concerned about protecting women than protecting men, and good on Frank for spending 15 years trying when nobody else cared.

  16. dad4justice Says:

I liked the writings of Frank Haden, as often it was straight to the jugular and he set a standard not often seen by the new age of controlled journalism It is sad he cannot continue with his words of wisdom.

One of Franks famous phrases when asked about life; “ I’m the most assiduous flogger of dead horses there is. I have always worked on the principle that if you flog it hard enough for long enough, it will eventually come back to life, or at least thrash about a bit.”

I suppose that’s how feminists obtained a Ministry of Women’s Affairs, while the average kiwi male just keeps getting flogged, until the men’s right horse decides to do a bolt across the ditch, or he decides to have the end all conversation with the double barrel.

Balance…yeah right …not in kiwiland mate as the Amazons run this show.

  17. hayman Says:

D4J, Notice John Key resurrected a Womens Affairs spokeperson in his new lineup. While “Eradicating Political Correctness” was … well eradicated .

  18. dad4justice Says:

Labour / National …. it does not matter Hayman…..Clark or Key = men get shafted either way. Look at the unfair DV Act, and look at the recent prejudice from the inept families commission .Both sides guilty .Hardly in the child’s best interests !!! Don’t forget the suicide rate eh mate !!!

    What caused this ?

The iron fisted velvet glove strategy from the cunning feminist underground, who have been assisted by well dressed male eunuch’s from both red and blue political camps. They have eradicated any chance of real men having any say in the running of this pc country .

    Welcome to the machine .

  19. Paul Marsden Says:

I hope Frank Haden lives a long, long life and wish him well. We need more jurnos like Frank. Whilst I didnt always find myself agreeing with his point of view,on most occassions I did. I would often wish that somebody of his ilk and kind, could be found to run for public office. Best wishes Frank.

  20. James Says:

Yet another reason…if one was needed …to remove health care from the claws of the State monopoly and open it right up to free choice and copetition.Put it out of the reach of socialists and PC perverts….Lets end the “Die while you wait” slaughter system.

  21. dad4justice Says:

    James
I think we already have ” Die while you wait slaughter system ” here in kiwiland . Many elderly and children do exactly that while on our hospital waiting lists !!!
