Why not pay-per-view?

December 31st, 2006 at 3:23 pm by David Farrar

I see NZ TV stations are debating whether to show Saddam’s execution. I recall being shown the Romanian dictator’s execution on TV, and also seeing burnt bodies of westerners in Iraq, killed by terrorists, so not sure why this would not qualify as just as news worthy.

But anyway why not make it a pay-per-view special, with all money made donated to a charity to help his former victims? Hell one could do a Telethon and take pledges also!!

Didnt know that hanging was an “islamic” form of justice. Didnt they go for beheading.

as these comments from the Saudi official executioner in 2003 are interesting.

Saudi Arabia’s leading executioner Muhammad Saad Al-Beshi will behead up to seven people in a day.

“It doesn’t matter to me: Two, four, 10 — As long as I’m doing God’s will, it doesn’t matter how many people I execute,” he told Okaz newspaper in an interview.

He started at a prison in Taif, where his job was to handcuff and blindfold the prisoners before their execution. “Because of this background, I developed a desire to be an executioner,” he says.

He applied for the job and was accepted.

His first job came in 1998 in Jeddah. “The criminal was tied and blindfolded. With one stroke of the sword I severed his head. It rolled meters away.” Of course he was nervous, then, he says, as many people were watching, but now stage fright is a thing of the past.

He says he is calm at work because he is doing God’s work. “But there are many people who faint when they witness an execution. I don’t know why they come and watch if they don’t have the stomach for it.

“Me? I sleep very well,” he adds.

In the age of the internet it it not required for TVNZ or TV3 screen Saddam’s execution, reporting it and its consequences is more important. If someone wants to see it then they can go out of their way to watch it online.

Why pay when you can see the whole thing for free, courtesy of a Videophone camera, on the internet.

I think this is a really good idea David.

Some people they might want to see it or need to so that they can really believe that it has happened. I am not in either category, I don’t want to turn the TV on, channel surf and then stumble accross that (though I do/did support his execution) so pay-per-view for charity towards his victims is an excellent solution.

I would just add that there should be an option to donate the money to such a charity without viewing it – a sort of pay-to-not-view option.

What’s the point of a pay-per-view when the whole execution is on google video – or was as of yesterday.

I think such prurient interest is slightly grotesque. Surely everyone knows what a hanging entails. Does one really have to see it? Okay, perhaps I am the only one not interested.

The issue won’t be of “newsworthiness” – clearly it is a newsworthy story.

It will be of taste – you might see bodies but you don’t usually see actual people being executed on the news.

How graphic the pictures are is also an issue.

Note too that the Broadcasting Standards Authority recently upheld complaints about a clip of a snuff movie being shown on TV so there is a recent precedent where such pictures were found to breach broadcasting standards.

I once watched someone jump from Auckland’s Grafton Bridge and the feeling I got from watching that was much like the one I got from watching the Saddam execution footage. The news in New Zealand NEVER shows this sort of thing. NEVER. Why now?
FoxNews can’t seem to get enough of it.
The story is newsworthy, but showing the footage is sensationalism. Pure and simple. It taps into people’s morbid curiosity, used to sell advertising.
Don’t get me wrong, I am as curious as much as the next perdaughter, but it somehow seems … icky.
