Chester Borrows

January 29th, 2007 at 9:19 am by David Farrar

Chester is today’s featured new Nat MP. I’ve known Chester for around a decade or so, as he was a third time candidate, and like everyone who knows him was delighted when he made it this time.

As an ex-cop, his comments on the Police are worth noting:

Were you disenchanted with the police and what would you change?

I think to some degree the police have disengaged from society from where they were, say, 20 years ago. Police have almost become a little bit exclusive in who they mix with and what they do within communities. I think they’ve run off down some roads that are more about accounting to the Treasurer than doing what people want. There’s been an over-concentration on road policing and a disengagement from … real crime.

And in terms of MPs from other parties:

I’ve got a healthy respect for Tariana Turia and Pita Sharples. They just ooze mana. I’ve got a healthy respect for Sue Bradford’s intellect. I disagree with her strongly on a number of issues and probably agree with her more than she would care to think. Nandor Tanczos has got a great grasp of social and criminal justice.

This makes 2 MPs in a row greasing up to Turia and the Maori party. Key’s been expressing some pro-Maori party sentiments recently as well, IIRC.

Either a/ they’re deliberately trying to distance themselves from any dubious accusations of racism caused by Orewa I and II, and/or b/ they fancy themselves in a coalition government with the Maori Party next year. My guess is with both.

MMP is all about pragmatism. You must have power to effect change, but under MMP you must compromise to get it. Where to draw the line is the really interesting question.

Well this is still on the National website as one of 5 KEY messages.

We need to head off the dangerous drift to racial separatism and deal fairly and finally with historical grievances. We must ensure all New Zealanders are treated equally before the law.

Of course the Maori party is ‘racial separatism’ personified and the Maori sovereignity face is Tariana Turia ( the one with the US father)

So now National wants get into bed with ‘racial separatism’ instead of ‘heading off this dangerous drift’

Snow White , you really have drifted.

The last coalition with true blue maori Winnie was a disaster. Sharples and Turia would make Winnie seem like Lockwood Smith

I find his comments on the ditinction between road crime and real crime a bit odd. I think if a person is killed by a speeding/careless/drunk driver, that is actually a pretty serious crime.

I wonder if MPs have been directed to cosy up to the Maori party, or if they have just independently decided they need to court the potential coalition partner

The Herald should really try this tactic of emailing the same questions to MPs more often . It seems to work a treat.
Its obvious that each person doesnt have a face to face interview. Nor are the answers going to lead to new questions.
More than likely the party media spin masters provided guidelines on how to answer the questions.
This perhaps why there is a sudden love of Tariana Turia breaking out amoungst the new Mps ( but dont mention the Labour Party unless you are Chris Finlayson and can get away with it).

Along with the recent “Investigate” interview with John Key , who strangely had Bill English with him so he didnt drop any clangers, it seems the national party has decided to do a ‘cotton wool ‘ strategy and avoid any real media scrutiny. The worry of course is that they will alienate the core believers as they move holus bolus to the centre.

As DPF has admitted his research company has started polling this year. No doubt he does a lot of the in house polling for National. Likely to be trying out some “new” messages to replace the current 5 key promises ,before they are set loose on the larger public

Kent – all there is no grand co-ordination of answers and MPs nominate Sharples and Turia, simply because they have been easy to work with.

Sharples and Turia must have the socialists shitting their pants, fancy telling Maori that they should dump the dole or be made to work for the dole. My God what are they thinking.

Dear Leader will be spinning the last thing these control freaks need are a people free from the yoke of the welfare state. Maori need Dear Leaders guiding hand and of course her worldly advice on life is second to none ( tui ad ).

The Maori party are on the right track I just hope National dosn’t screw it up by playing piggy in the middle.

Yes having been a Maoist until comparatively recently (late 80s) – oozing intellect! Nothing like respecting someone who was once aligned to the greatest mass murderer in history, and has only stepped a couple of places to the right since then.

Does anybody else find it a bit sinister that the *cough* country’s leading daily newspaper is focusing merely on MPs from one party in these “interviews”?

I agree with Kent and Liberty Scott. That so many of the “new” Nats apparently admire such politically odious colleagues has to be a sign that the party is completely lost ideologically. The Maori Party is IMHO a group of political opportunists attempting to capitalize on the growing racial divide in this country. Its policies and its very existence will bring nothing but social destruction, as any party based on race and privilege would bring.

Of the many people I know who have quit this country for Australia and other places, the majority have specified the rise of the Maori Party as one of the main reasons for going. The Nats need to wake up and start confronting the twin evils of socialism and racism, but really, I don’t think they ever will. Perhaps the best service they can ever do NZ now is to fade away gracefully and let a new party do the work.

    Red,

I left New Zealand in 1998 because I thought NZ wasn’t as exciting as “overseas” and came back in 2004 because I had changed my mind. Should I attribute this to political shifts, or would it be perhaps more sensible to consider falling travel costs and other factors that increased ease of mobility?

The many people who you know that went overseas are more likely to hate the Maori party because they are your friends, and are therefore more likely to share your outlook. I wonder if the many people from the opposite side of the political spectrum who go overseas every year blame their shift on the Maori or Labour parties.

“I’ve got a healthy respect for Sue Bradford’s intellect.”

But Chester how could you possibly respect this – communist- deadbeat- women with her wrongful pc -nanny – approach, as she does not want the ” Maori beneficary bashing that is inherent to the work for dole scheme “.

In other words she wants more lazy layabouts on the sickness or invalids benefit so she can say unemployment is down .

Please get real Chester as this women is far from intelligent , as she couldn’t even answer my question contained in my submission on the pathetic smacking bill. Silly Sue stormed out of the room ….haha ….How else would I expect a dumb feminazi to act !!

Tiger, the people leaving NZ because of the Maori party are the smart ones. They know that as the party’s political presence grows, so will NZ’s economic position, its political stability and its social cohesion decrease. Will you still be here when the value of the NZ dollar and the value of your house will (in global terms) be a fraction of what they are today. If so, what does that make you?

Of course not…I haven’t the slightest expectation that the daily rag otherwise known as the National Party Newsletter should be required to feature anything relating to non-Party business at all.
