Spamming Google Earth

January 29th, 2007 at 10:46 pm by David Farrar

Great. Companies are now spamming Google Earth. Basically they are placing big logos and ads on parks when they think a photo taking plane is flying overhead.

A very heated debate in comments.

    That’s not spamming.

The ‘debate’ is ‘heated’ because a legion of fuckwits from slashdot visited.

Not so much as “when they think a plane will be flying over” this was a special Australia Day Sydney fly over that Google pre announced and invited people to do wacky things…

    australia day sydney fly over

Google Australia is celebrating Australia Day 2007 by photographing Sydney Harbour from the air, and we want to make sure as many of us as possible squeeze into the picture.

So when you see the Google branded plane flying overhead this January 26th, hoist a sign, arrange your family into a fun formation or just get a bunch of friends together to wave.

The plane has permission to fly low and will be taking hi-resolution pictures like this one of people on ‘Het Plein’ in The Hague. Wear or do something distinctive to make sure you can spot yourself.

According to ‘El Reg, On the day they didn’t fly anyway some large chunks of their planned route,

Air Services Australia spokesman Terry O’Connor said that the pilot was warned last week the flight plans would be “very difficult or impossible”. He continued: “To allow them to do what they wanted, we would have had to close the runway [at Sydney Airport].”

Seems Sergey and Larry might have been better to take the Google jet to Sydney after their NZ holiday and take photos out the window.

Your delicate eyes will probably also need protecting from the 40 metre long swear word made out of hay bales in Yorkshire.
