Action Hobson u-turn

February 28th, 2007 at 10:05 am by David Farrar

Action Hobson has done a sudden u-turn on the billboards ban.

This is ironic as Christine Caughey is the Cr who first pushed for restrictions in early 2006. I guess they now realise how deeply unpopular the proposed ban is.

However by doing this u-turn just three days before submissions close, they’ve just managed to alienate both City Vision and C&R on Council (a rare feat to offend both) for grandstanding.

Cauighey is stuffed in 2007. She may as well make a Wagnerian exit with all her leftist guns blazing, never to re-enter politics but sticking to her “principles”.

Yep. Building owners, who lose income and therefore property value. $10,000 in billboard rent is worth $100,000 in property value (rule of thumb).

Retailers will also be upset with the proposals, because many retail signs in the CBD and mainstreet Auckland like Ponsonby, Newmarket and Mt Eden do not comply with the signs portion of the proposal. So everyone from the fashion house, to the dairy, to the bank must spend thousands of dollars in removing existing signs and putting new ones up.

Lastly, I think commercial advertising is often amusing and adds character to our commercial city – and I suspect many others think the same too.

It is all about stopping a similar campaign National ran in the last election. But no matter the leftist council are toast in October.
