Barnett not contesting Christchurch Mayoralty

Bob Parker’s chances of being elected Mayor of Christchurch have very significantly improved with the confirmation that Christchurch Central MP Tim Barnett will not be contesting the job.

Barnett concluded that he could not do his current job as MP and Chief Whip, and the job of Mayor. he is absolutely right. If he had contested and been elected, he could not do the job justice unless he resigned as an MP. A big city Mayor is not a part-time job.

Now that Barnett has confirmed he is remaining an MP, I will be surprised if he is not promoted to Cabinet before the next election.
