We moved to Aust about three years ago. At the time we only had a dial connection and upgraded to broadband when we arrived in Aust. Prior to us leaving, I recall there was considerable discussion about Telecom unbundling Broadband speeds. Therefore I am somewhat dissappointed to see some of the plans offered by Xtra and not much has changed.

Telstra (AUST) are just as dogmatic about unbundling but a low to medium level plan is operating somewhere from 512k to 1500k and upto 8000k. ADSL2 is also availabe offering speeds of around 2400k. Slow compared to the rest of the world but better than Telecom NZ.

I cannot believe that Telecom NZ has been allowed to promote broadband while only allowing such slow speeds. We constantly hear that NZ must operate a smart economy focused on innovation, development etc – shame that the basic requirement of decent broadband access is not at the forefront of the Govt’s mind. Surely Helen, Hubbard, Hucker or any other ‘H Men’ could score a few cheap politcal points by shoving Telecom around a little…
