Maori Census Stats

Stats NZ have released some detailed info on Maori New Zealanders. Some of the ones I noticed:

* 565,329 NZers identify as Maori
* Of those 565,329 a bit under half also identify as European – 238,698
* 8,415 NZers are both Maori and Asian
* By region, Auckland has 137,136 Maori followed by Waikato at 76,572 and BOP at 67,662.
* By TLA, Manukau has 47,343, Auckland 29,850, Chch 25,725.
* The city with the least is Nelson with 3,615
* The median age has increased from 21.9 in 2001 to 22.7 in 2006
* Only 23,130 Maori are over the retirement age of 65, or 4.1%
* 131,613 Maori can speak Maori, or 23.3%
* Almost 50% of Maori aged over 65 can speak Maori though
* In BOP/Gisborne the proportion speaking Maori is over 30%, while on the West Coast it is 12%. Auckland is 20% and Wellington 23%
* A significant difference by gender with degree qualifications. Only 8,517 Maori men have degrees while 14,547 Maori women do.
* BOP has the highest Maori unemployment at 9.1%, then Northland at 8.8%, while in Marlborough it is only 3.5%
* Median personal income has increased from $14,800 to $20,900 since 2001. Is only $17,500 in Gisborne but $24,700 in Auckland.
* There are 643,977 people in total with some Maori ancestry
* Somewhat strangely 4,059 people identify as Maori, yet are not of Maori descent
* Off the 643,977 NZers of Maori descent, 195,456 belong to two or more Iwi.

All useful data from Stats. A pity they did not include total NZ population figures as a comparison though. I could have dug them up myself but don’t have the time.
