My money is on Hilary even though I think she is a turbo charged Helen Clark. At the moment Obama is campaigning in states that have a big black constituency but Hilary is in the race. The game will change soon. Of course I think they will both be on the ticket it is just a matter of which way around. But if one accepts the first law of politics that the warm politician (Obama) drives out the cold polician (Hilary) then Obama will get the nomination.

I actually think Clinton is a better qualified candidate than Obama for President, so Sonic’s pathetic nonsense about this being a personal attack is just that.

Of course the thing about US primaries is that they are anything but predictable. Frontrunners going into the primaries often fall within the first few weeks, although this time around given the sums of money involved, it’s hard to see where a surprise challenge of the sort Bill Clinton pulled off in 92 could come from? A last minute entry by Al Gore perhaps?

Chris – in 1992 there was no clear front runners – a very wide field. For 08 hard to see how it won’t be two of the big five (or six if Gore runs).

Danyl – if one has to explain humour, then it’s too late. I see it actually as a parody of african american culture (yes in fact Obama not Clinton has more right to be offended) which to varying degree uses both the bro and the hoe word.

I don’t. Oh, maybe… almost. Does that make it better?

Okay, now I can thinks it’s funny for seconds at a time. But priceless? This is my disappointment talking.

It did lead me to look on unbrandictionary and find people do really use the gardening-impliment spelling. I’m aware that in some people use the word as if they don’t think it’s offensive, but, I think that’s because they’re misogynists.

As a general note, being left cold by a joke because it perpetuates something you despise is not the same as no sense of humour. I am extremely secure in my sense of humour.

And how many precious petals are boycotting Everybody Hates Chris – you know, the vaguely autobiographical sit-com created and co-produced by Chris Rock, whose stand-up routine once contained a rather notorious monologue with the *ahem* provocative title ‘Niggers vs. Black People’. I didn’t see him being blacklisted from any Democrat fundraisers.

The politics of humour is a rather funny beast – often more amusing than the comedy itself. Personally, I find Borat about as funny as a caustic soda enema – but it’s absolutely hilarious seeing people explain that it’s OK to laugh at gross racism, Jew-bating and homophobia because Sasha Baron-Coen is Jewish. South Park however is fascist bigoted trash.

Or we’ve got to be tolerant of the misogyny and queer-baiting in hip-hop culture, because it’s a response to back oppression by the forces of colonialism. (What that has to do with habitually trashing black women as gold-digging nymphos fit for little beyond giving head is beyond me, but never mind.) Country music, however, is sexist and enjoyed by too many ideologically unsound white people.

BTW, while Daryl cranks up the faux outrage around Coulter has anyone noticed the deafening silence about Isaiah Washington (the Grey’s Anatomy who really did check himself into ‘rehab’ after calling a fellow actor a ‘little faggot’ in an on-set argument) received an NAACP Image Award a few weeks back.

It looks like homophobia seems to be pretty acceptable at the heart of the black liberal establishment as well.

Personally I think South Park, Chris Rock and Borat can defend themselves my using the ‘it’s just a joke’ defense on the excellent grounds that their material is, well, funny – even if I don’t agree with their politics. And if someone challenged me to explain WHY Borat is funny then I think I could effortlessly do so.

DPF seems somewhat less capable of explaining why it’s so hilarious to point out that Obama is black and to call Hilary a ho.

As regards humor in general, there’s a (pretty fucking obvious if you ask me) difference between comedians commenting on the issues of racism or sexuality and a political figure attacking their opponents using racial or sexual slurs.

As a hypothetical illustration, I wouldn’t have a problem with a political cartoonist showing Hilary as a hooker lining up a bunch of Johns who symbolise all the special interest groups the Dems have to pander to – this would be mildly amusing and make a point.
DPF’s ‘priceless’ tee-shirt doesn’t work on that level though – it’s message is simply that Hilary is a whore and Obama is a nigger. Bigotry simply doesn’t get any dumber.

Danyl – I have not acted against anyone else who said they don’t like the picture, or are offended by it. That is their right. I have even debated TC at length on the issue.

But when you use it to portray me as a bigot motivated by political hatred to label CLinton a whore and Obama a nigger is so far beyond the pale, than you have crossed the line. You have no idea how offensive you are with that.

Good God I think it will be a good thing when the US has a female President and a black President.

Humour comes down to motivations. A Jewish joke told be a Jew to Jewish friends is for example different to the same joke told by a Nazi at a KKK meeting. Motivation is evrything when it comes to humour, and you attacked my motivation to paint me a bigot. You got the logicial response.

I agree Danyl is generally one of the best posters. But you need to understand that I only blog because I enjoy it. No I don’t do it to secure global victory for the forces of right. Now when someone takes my sense of humour and uses it to paint me as a bigot, well that destroys all enjoyment for me. It makes me want to give up blogging. That is why one of the rules is to not to attack my motives (my reasoning, my facts etc are all fine).

As for how I qualify. Easy. I don’t hate/dislike Hillary or Barack Obama, let alone women or blacks generally. When I saw the t-shirt my visualisation was of a Democrat supporter of Obama wearing it as a joke.

It amazes me that anyone could think it is seriously calling Clinton a “Ho”. Bill Clinton maybe, but not Hillary!

BTW, I’m MUCH more offended by the rather superficial mainstream media coverage of the already dumb-as-nails Democratic primary – which that T-shirt catches all too accurately, IMO. Then again, this is a country where a disturbingly large chunk of the population regards The Daily Show as a credible news source, so I understand why some folks wouldn’t see the joke when ‘news’ parodies itself with surreal ease.

What you fail to understand tc is that you’ve taken hoe out of context of the phrase. The phrase is not personally about Clinton or about Obama. It’s nothing to do with any of them at all. It’s a phrase rappers use in their songs – if you can call them songs.

The ‘joke’ being the unique situation where there is a woman and a black guy after the same job juxtapositions against a stupid phrase used in the streets – none of the elements are related. There is nothing sinister about it whatsoever.
Stop making it into something it’s not.

TC – with the Trace Hodgson cartoon, I did not label it anti-semitic. I said some had found it that, and listed the pros and cons for whether it might be, and stated that in the end I couldn’t conclude if it was.

Now to compare to this, it would be like if Trace Hodgson had a blog, had that cartoon on his blog and I went to his blog and called Trace Hodgson a jew hating bigot.

And thank you to NZ for putting things in the right context. It isn’t about Clinton or Obama. It’s about taking a common saying, and using it in an different setting for humour value.

They think the tshirt is bigoted. Tshirts are not famous for subtlety of sentiment or deep context, although this is, of course, not the USA and we might miss some stuff that difficult to explain.

You did express support for the tshirt, and if someone has issues with the original then they’ll probably have issues with that; that not the same thing as calling you a bigot.

I can see how you took Danyl to be attributing what he (me too, to some extent) sees as its sentiment to you but that’s not my reading.

It is of course your blog and you’re not obliged to tolerate anything that annoys you. Just makes me sad is all.

Oh well there goes the last reason to read the kiwiblog comments threads 🙁

If Trace Hodgeson drew a cartoon of John Key and Judith Collins and called it “Kikes before Dykes” and refused to apologise saying it was a “priceless joke” then it would be right to tell him he was an anti-semite and jew-hater and David Farrar would be the first person in line and wouldn’t be worried about spoiling Hodgesons enjoyment of cartooning or questioning his motiviations.

Danyl Mclauchlan was right to say that the tee-shirt is insulting and that people who think it is funny are bigots. It’s a shame that he hurt your feelings and that you were offended by this but the most important part of NOT being a bigot is to understand that black people and women are even MORE hurt and offended when you refer to them as “Bros” and “Hoes”. If you don’t get that then maybe Danyl was right.

I’ve heard the phrase “Bros before Hoes” before. I know it’s a common phrase. It’s also a very offensive phrase. As a woman I find it incredibly offensive being referred to as a “ho”. If you haven’t figured this out for yourself you must be very young or very stupid. “Tight as a Jew” is also a common phrase but that doesn’t mean it’s okay to stick it on a tee-shirt and make disgusting jokes about Jewish politicians.

And how can you claim that the elements in the picture have nothing to do with each other? There’s a picture of a black man and a women directly above the words “Bros” and “Hoes”? Do you really believe your own words? Once again I think you must be very young or very dumb.

And if you think I’m being a “sanctimonious ass-wipes” then I think you should try and experiment. Get up from your computer and go outside and try calling every woman you see a “ho”. If they get angry tell them that it’s just a common phrase and they are just being a sanctimonious asswipe. Let me know how that works out for you.

OK, Katie I’ll try and meet you half way. I can see how the phase can be offensive, particularly to women & to someone of your vintage.

But try & understand the point I made in my last post; the phrase is not personally targeted @ Hilary or Obama because it wasn’t coined for them. Do you get that? It was made by someone else for another situation. It’s as simple as that. The humorous aspect, which has been explained to dead, is juxtaposing the street phrase with the unique situation that the two front runners in the Democratic premiers is a black guy and a women. It was never meant to be sinister – unless you over analyse it like you have. Jokes are never meant to be analysed & I’m kind of embarrassed to be still discussing it.

The real issue Katie, which David has correctly reacted to, is people like you going off the deep end and calling everyone ‘bigots’ then suggesting I should call every women a ‘hoe’ in an effort to convey how offended you are. The irony is yours and Danyls reactions are far more offensive than the original joke.
