Ruapehu Lahar

A long awaited lahar has finally emerged from Mt Ruapehu today. Sounds like it was a moderate one. Morphyoss has been following the action.

I noted with quiet satisfaction that the lahar was the controlled non-event the engineers and scientists said it would be.

Will the media (in particular the ComPost) now grovel and apologise for their breatless predictions of Tangiwai-style death and destruction? Not bloody likely.

Whenever the media beats something up like the entirely predictable, harmless Ruapehu lahar, you know that nothing will happen. Just recall the Y2K bug, sars, bird flu and this year’s international beat-up, global warming. The tradition of the media beating up claims of armageddon goes right back to Malthus and has always proved wrong.

Real disasters, of course, such as September 11 or the Aceh tsunami, cannot be predicted. Unlike media predictions, they are also real.

Dave – why not control the release of the build up rather than consult local iwi, Doc and any other insignificant stand by’s before the event happens uncontrolled anyway.

Don’t let any NZ media organisation piss you off, they just don’t warrant it man!

Dave is right in a sense: the safety systems put in place were well planned and worked well. I personally would have liked to see small earthworks conducted to further mitigate risks, however unlike Mr I.P .Freely, who I do not hesitate to say is a moron, I am aware of the history of ownership of Ruapehu National Park, which goes thus: Tuwharetoa donated the National Park to New Zealand, for all of us to enjoy, but in return there was the understanding that the tribe retained the right to consultation in whatever matters it saw fit. However outlandish one considers their particular objection to lahar-mitigating earthworks or controlled release of water, the fact remains that it was their right, and not some communist/gay/mental privilege. We all owe Tuwharetoa a great deal of gratitude for their gifts of what was private property for the nation, and high-spending international tourists, to enjoy. I think they were wrong on that one, but in the end all it cost was more complicated earthworks further down and a comperhensive early warning system.

-“shit we pander to the primitives”, a statement which suggests that Mr I.P .Freely has the moronic opinion that Maori people are primitive.

-“maori crim”, a statement which suggests that Mr I.P .Freely ‘s simple mind is so impressionable to breathless, sensationalised media reports about violent crime that he is scared of anyone with brown skin.

Hey, why am I even arguing with this simpleton? he won’t even understand my reposts. My point ( mostly agreeing with Dave) was in the first place, is that this lahar, and future lahar risks, is not important to news/politics as the status it is given

The 6 lahar patrol traffic police cars will now have to move on from protecting the tangiwhia, the deed has been done and honest travelers can cross the desert road without these vulchers???RIPPPOFF ARTESTSZ??? GENERAL RIPOFF REVENUE TOSSIERS BEING AROUND, not much hope, Dont get raped when the lahar police are around , speeding tickets is the only reason, for there existance

Seems like the lahar was no-where near as big as might have been. If you ask me, the Govt can thank their lucky stars.

sorry paul, but why should the Govt thank it’s lucky stars. Are you another who thinks the Govt is responsable for natural disasters. I thought that was ment to be Gods domain.
Lahars happen, 45 at last count according to Chris Carter on TV tonight.
they happen, the’re going to continue to happen and not every one of them is going to give us the luxury of the extended warning this one did.
The last lahar that i saw on the mountain happened in an instant with minimal warning.
It went straight through the Whakapapa ski area, picked up the kiosk from where it was and moved it down the mountain. The fact that it happened in summer and not winter was the only saving grace. Had it happened in winter, there wuld have been a loss of life.
Since then DOC has been working to avoid a similar disaster.
So give the moaning a rest. Maybe praise the people that put the systems together. You never know it my turn into another export earner.

Ostrich – the prediction of massive lahars

I stand by my criticism that the Government chose a more expensive more risky mitigation strategy than necessary. I never said that the path they chose would automatically fail and it is facile to suggest I did.

Considering blowing your top is now legislated against in NZ I assume Sue Bradford is strapping on her crampons to head up there and give it a bloody good talking to… you know, suggesting alternative strategies like steaming deeply, entering mediation with the earth’s core, that sort of thing.
