Telecom Yellow Pages sale

Telecom looks to have got a reasonable price for its yellow pages sale – $2.24 billion. It will be interesting to see how much of that goes into capital investment – and will it be here or in Australia.
I do find it ironic that the new owner of our yellow pages business isn’t another telco or a known directory operator but instead the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan. Yep a group of Canadian teachers now effectively own it

Ontario Teachers are clients of mine.
They are a smart bunch of people (The investment managers, not the teachers per se.)

Hey, my mum’s a retired Ontario teacher (and member of the pension plan)! Now it’s no coincidence they bought the Yellow Pages, they have billions upon billions and they have to do something with it. I wish they’d pay out a fair amount of money to the retired teachers. My mum gets bugger all and no matter how much the pension plan makes, her pension will never go out more than inflation.

Yellow Pages is (or at least was), the biggest monopoly rort out. Telecom are wise to divest of it. In the mid 1980′s I was paying something around $375 for a 1/4 pg ad. For the past several years, the same quarter page ad has been costing me around $10,000 plus. It is by far, the least cost effective advertising I do. This year, a number of businesses I know of have cancelled their Yellow Pages advertisng (or scaled back dramatically) Next year, I will be cancelling mine also. Why? Primarily the power of the interent and that I get more bang for my bucks elsewhere.

Which should tell you something about how much the identity of the owner matters. All that hot air about foreign ownership…. *yawn*

Now will Telecom use that 2 billion to improve the exchanges for everyone or do they still have to refund all the Go Large users?
