Nigel, thanks.

I guess I naively assumed that whatever deal lets Sky/Saturn carry TVs 1 and 2 would cover the rest of the digital service when it starts. I totally agree that people won't pick up a second remote to watch it unless the programmes are world-class. Even using another mode on a multi-use remote might be a bit much. Don't you hate being in the wrong mode?

Cathi, I believe initially via satellite, but there will be a ground based digital system ( not sure if it uses an existing aerial ) which will also be the one with High Definition broadcast on it ( ie. Freeview will not go satellite HD, only terrestial ).

I agree with you Dave - once you have Sky, you just don't change inputs to view channels outside Sky. TVNZ may want more leverage over Sky, but they're going to have to balance that with viewers who just don't come to them. I know I wouldn't.

Poor TV reception must be the number one reason why people go for Sky or SaturnTV (as was). In our case we could see TVOne provided you weren't too fussy about facial details, TV3 was watchable in a Picasso sense, and TV2 was not viewable at all except in thunderous rain.

We don't even have a roof aerial any more - it was shared with a neighbour, on their roof and in a storm last spring it came off. We all agreed we didn't need to spend the money on putting it back.

Forgive my ignorance but how is the digital signal going to get to houses? I assumed via a roof aerial but I have no idea.

Our TV reception is so lousy, that if it weren't for Sky, we wouldn't be able to watch the free-to-air channels at all.

Sky isnt going to broadcast TVNZ digital feed unless they get something in return, like advertising at mates rates on TVNZs analog channels.

You forget the present analog channels TV1,2,3,etc have only a short life , they will be replaced by say a dozen or more channels using the same frequency band( or it might be moved to a new one). They will also dispense with the satellite dish or roof 'clothsline' , just needing a short rubber/steel rod to pick up line of sight digital transmissions
TVNZ and TV3 need to have their own distribution or else they will be at SKYs mercy
