DPF on domains

A couple of weeks ago I was interview by TVNZ for an item on domain names and Domainz. It finally screened yesterday, and is linked here. Just under three minutes.
The decisions taken in 2000 – 2001 to introduce more competition into the .nz domain market have been justified over time, in my opinion. There are now over 60 registrars for people to choose from, the wholesale price has dropped (now $1.50 a month), the retail offerings include a healthy range of prices, terms and products, plus the former registry, Domainz, has survived despite losing the registry and just being one of many competitive registrars.

The wholesale price is still too high. Why is it twice the price of a .com ($US6.42 a year)?
