This bar and indeed all privately owned premises have the right to ban who they like for whatever reason they likes regardless of law or the wishes of others. As its private property that means the owner has the right to say who comes and who doesn’t….its an inseparable part of their right to liberty.Junk law, like anti discrimination laws thrust on private property owners are contradictory and invalid….scrapping them and allowing people to discriminate is the only way we can have a truly free society. The market will sort it out without to much fuss.
(DO WONDER HOW LESBIANS COULD INTIMIDATE ETC ETC ) sorry unaha-closp ,have you checked out the uni- edu- warted thing that rules in our country in our names. no names mentioned but the token man in the leaders life HASNT a similar surname,or???at least hes a differant sex(NOT)
I actually agree with you, and spending my evening in the company of misogynistic heterophobic faggots is not my idea of fun. But let’s be consistent: I’d be tempted to open a bar called the Enoch Powell, with a ‘no fags, no dykes and absolutely no creepy trannies’ door policy.
And I thought this passage from the linked story reeked to high heaven of bullshit: The Peel Hotel in Melbourne won an exemption from the Equal Opportunity Act to prevent insults and abuse directed toward gays in its bars and nightclubs, owner Tom McFeely told AFP.
Insults and abuse? I thought any decently run bar would be showing that kind of person the door – regardless of their (presumed) sexual orientation.
Thanks for handing this week’s Public Address Radio piece to me on a silver platter – because one thing I find desperately unfunny is bourgeois straight white folks getting all offended on my behalf.
And, James, feel free to write Sonic the reality check. I’m otherwise occupied trying to figure out why most of my father’s side of the family have this Black Like Me thing going on, and why I can’t find the vagina on the person I’ve been sharing my privileged straight white bed with for the past twelve years.
Here they all are on here promoting themselves as anti-discrimination and for freedom of expression, yet this bar owner, who of course has every right to do so, decides to discriminate against all on the grounds that a few might be “insulting or abusive”. Precious little souls aren’t they. I guess they got nowhere hitting people with their handbags.
This is just more of the same anti-freedom of expression stuff from homosexual authoritarians who have jailed people in Canada for breaking their speech codes. Political correctness to the max- you must not challenge the social mores and doctrines of the homosexual political movement.
What this shows is that when people insist that a person’s sexual orientation has no bearing on his/ her job, they’re wrong. Maybe in some jobs, but definitely not if that person is a legislator. Or a bar owner.
Once, Clark and Labour realise that they will not be in government for some time after the next election I am sure their will be plenty PC legislation forced through the House not to mention even more jobs for gays. Positive discrimination for one person is negative discrimination for another.
Wow. Mr McFeely says that straight men and woman of all flavours make them feel uncomfortable and should not be allowed in. If a hetrosexual man feels uncomfortable about gay men he is called a homophobe. If a bar sort an exemption from the law to ban homosexuals because it made the regular clientele uncomfortable and changed the atmosphere of the establishment they would be pilloried. This is outrageous as far as I am concerned. I should be allowed to go into any bar, regardless of my sexual orientation. I also wonder how it will be enforced. “Yeah, we’re all gay, just not particularly frisky tonight”.

Not if the PRIVATE PROPERTY OWNER doesn’t want you there you don’t.Its so simply yet so many don’t get it.He/she who own the property concerned has the right(or should have under good law) to say what goes on there….simple.There is no such thing as a right to use another’s property against their will….at least not in any moral and civilized context.Discrimination is a right due to it being part of the right to liberty….respect it please.

I agree with you actually. The point is though that the fact that a club is PRIVATE PROPERTY hasn’t stopped the owners being forced to admit people they didn’t to for decades. Look how many Men’s Clubs were forced to admit women during the 80s. If it were anyone but a gay club seeking the ban on the basis of sexual orientation they would probably be shut down by the authorities.
PJ you are a pathetic weak-willed coward who dreams he is on a victory tour, hailed as the epitome of the new -age androgynous man .
By the way you bumbling idiot – hows the thesis going on Michael Jackson you communist fungus ?

Exactly…its not that its a gay club banning heterosexuals that’s the issue…its that Government is meddling in private matters and applying bad law subjectively…always a recipe for future tyranny and chaos. The State picking winners….where have we seen that failed crap before?
The first “Hetros Only“ bar is but a niche marketing opportunity away.”
Why not? If there’s a demand and someone sets it up with there own money on their own property then its all good.I’m not having to attend or pay for it so its no skin off my nose. But the State will not allow it…..begging the question…by what right don’t they allow it?
