New Telecom CEO

June 28th, 2007 at 8:19 am by David Farrar

Telecom announced this morning that Dr Paul Reynolds will replace Theresa Gattung as CEO.

Dr Reynolds is currently CEO of the network access division (called Open Reach) of British Telecom. He should not be confused with local IT personality Paul Reynolds.

I think this is a good appointment as it signifies the Telecom Board has a commitment to making Telecom succeed as an operationally (or structurally) separated company.

Telecom also deserve kudos for releasing now, rather than at annual report time, his salary details. He will get $1.75m a year plus up to another $1.75 million in performance bonuses. And he is guaranteed employment (effectively) for a minimum period of three years and gets 12 months of salary if they ask him to resign at any stage after that. Seems to be what one would expect for NZ’s largest company and about right for what he was on in the UK.

I see the Australian Tax office is investigating executives from the top 160 companies there and why details of salaries in the annual report doesnt match that which is on their tax returns ( for those that bother to actually file a return)

This is the sort of high calibre person the company should have had right from the start instead of Teresa Guttung and Rod Deane. Worthy people I presume, but they are just amateurs.

What Telecom requires more than anything else is a competent political operator. As a business it major concern is regulatory changes, not the almost non-existant competition.

    IT personality Paul Reynolds

I don’t understand why Paul Reynolds IT personality is often interviewed for his view on IT matters, because he is not really an expert in IT as it has always made out to be in the news media. Ok, he knows something about IT, but not deep enough to be called an expert in IT matters. It is time that these self-appointed IT experts, be shoved aside in making any further comments in the media about IT matters.

The info I saw said he was head of BT Wholesale not Open Reach.

Talking with John Campbell, he mentioned serving customers – which would be a refreshing change from Teresa’s and Roderick’s focus on short-term gain for shareholders.

How the appointment of Dr. Paul Reynolds is affecting me so far.

My emails like all Telecom NZ XtraMail customers were out Saturday, Aware of an upgrade I also had knowledge nothing needed to be done by me, all would automatically come online 6am Sunday .
Spent most of Sunday trying to get emails. No luck. Consulting the plethora of info. available on my new Yahoo!Xtra Bubble Pro Mail site, I followed instructions, no joy. Called Xtra helpdesk 4 times throughout and after prolonged waiting and a promised operator ulimately cut-off each time. Sent emails to myself from my GMail account, received by the XtraMail server, my server rigged to forward all to GoogleMail.
Monday I called Xtra help desk 9-30am after 35 minutes VERY bad line and could not understand a word of her unintelligble English, I asked her to call me back , nothing changed.  Rang help desk and got Kim, I could understand Kim but she needed to race off endlessly to consult others for info.  After receiving instructions from Kim and  completly re-setting account particulars still unable to receive emails.  Kim said that she would have a technitian call me back. That was 1pm., 2pm I sent this note to Telecom complaints. Now 6.00pm, have heard nothing.
I have been a staunch Telecom customer forty years. An initial shareholder.  I pay for enhanced email service, Telecom have always been my landline providor. All accounts continuosly paid by autopayment.  I feel that I deserve better.  My broadband Xtramail account worked Friday, I ask the question. How come Telecom offload something unasked for, then leave me with an unworkable situation ?
